ie: it's not the existence or acceptance of multiple diverse states of being that I wonder about, it's the organisation of these into labeled in- and out- groups (rather than just accepting the whole spectrum)

In the 80s I had the sense that the world and UK were a bit shit but I had a fundamental disposition towards optimism. Things got a bit better for a bit (or I had the sense that they did; maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention) but now I have the same sense as in the 80s but without the optimis...
