Re: Saturday 30th & Sunday 31st August
I made the comparison between Clacton and Dick Taverne in Lincoln back in 1973, just after the byelection was announced. Survation backs that up. It also shows having BoJo as Tory candidate would make naff-all difference. Amusing given all the media calls that Cameron should "beg" him to s...

The recently leaked UKIP "target list" (which they haven't exactly strenuously denied) had just one of its 12 seats Labour held - Great Grimsby.

Will the Kippers, those who've spouted so often about Ed 'knifing' his brother, complain about Roger Lord being pooped on by Carswell & Farage ? They certainly can't crow about "local candidates not being imposed by the party centre" any longer. Carswell didn't even have the courtesy ...

There has been some discussion re the timing of this by-election with regard to the party conferences. Re: Thursday 28th August 2014
SY deputy PCC Tracey Cheetham has resigned in the face of the Rotherham child abuse report. She is from Barnsley (so not implicated in this mess) a good sort and a Labour loyalist. I think she will be as disgusted at Wright's behaviour (not least jettisoning the party to save his own skin) as many.

Rotherham is an interesting constrast to Doncaster, actually. There, a previously complacent and at times corrupt Labour "fiefdom" *has* been reformed.
It can also be done next door if there is the will.

To answer the question just asked - "no" have been ahead throughout, though by varying margins.
The "quickie" survey last night gave a big Salmond "win" in the debate - but also claimed it had made no difference to referendum VI.
