It doesn't sound right for Nuneaton.
There was mention on Radio 4 about Chris Bryant calling Ed M a 'tosspot' and storming out of a Labour party. Anyone got more of an idea about what happened.

Short-termism, yes. They govern as though they genuinely don't see a future. Maybe they believe our environment is on course for a catastrophe within our lifetimes - within a decade, or less. I'm not saying that's true, about the environment, it's bad but I don't know when we tip over into a point of no return. That's not my point. Tory government are spectacularly awful and I can't understand how such stupid got into leadership.TR'sGhost wrote:Telegraph reporting that Bloomberg reckon the pound's slide against the dollar is now worst in sterling's history. Right now I want to see Cameron and Osborne's heads stuck on spikes on Westminster Bridge. Just how incompetent, short-termist and stupid can they be?

We have a similar situation, although rather than being an academic my missus works in a regional office of a Big Accountancy company, predominantly working with overseas companies with subsidiaries in the UK. She's going to be very busy as they uncouple from the UK, but after a year or two, then that's it, game over.RobertSnozers wrote:Cards on the table. I'm probably going to suffer personally in the event of a Brexit. My wife is an academic, and because of the amount of funding for research that comes to Britain via the EU, it's likely to have catastrophic effects on her. She works in a small department that's only ever one or two missed grants away from being closed. This is going to have a huge effect on a higher education sector that's already bowing under the pressure from cuts. And as for me, I'm a freelance writer, and my work almost died during the crash. During periods of uncertainty, the first thing companies hold back on is advertising. Magazines live by advertising - less of it means less content, and less paid for it. The sector is still tight - two titles in my sector are about to merge.
Funnily enough I've been approaching this referendum largely on issues of the greater good. Now I start to consider self interest, I get a very hollow feeling inded

Both the Guardian and Telegraph's live coverage have those bar chart things across the top. Both are portraying the referendum as a cartoon competition between Cameron and Johnson.
It's a bit more important than that I would have thought.

It's a Tory game, this. People aren't choosing between Cameron and Johnson. This is an EU referendum. Does the UK remain in the EU or no. That's all. Tory government isn't being chosen. Tory government remains.

What really is frustrating me is why has the country embraced the right wing vision since 2010 ?
Apart from Scotland.
If the working classes and others who feel so disenfranchised, and anti-immigrant because they are worried about their jobs/low pay/housing etc. had mobilised after the financial crash things might have changed for the good.
Why couldn't they be arsed to demand change for the system that caused recession, capitalism, yet have bothered to scream for Brexit ?

Perhaps because they've been given the opportunity to escape the clutches of the EU and "send back" immigrants, both of which have been oppressing them. Or so the media has relentlessly informed them year after year.
In the absence of an effective left, it's no surprise that simplistic, easily understood, "common sense" right wing "solutions" have a strong appeal.
Most of the people voting in this referendum have a shakey idea of how the EU actually works (if they have any idea at all). We're just not told remotely truthfully how politics, economics and international relations work and affect each other and daily life. Do other countries teach school-kids next to nothing about how their country is run or its constitution because that would be "political"?
