Britain’s blue-chip FTSE 100 index is smashing into Bull Market territory.
The Footsie has jumped by 60 points to 6650, a new 11-month high, as Andrea Leadsom confirms that she is withdrawing from the Tory party leadership battle.

Re: Monday 11th July 2016
Today I am announcing my decision to stand for the leadership of the Labour Party.
I would not do this if I did not think I had something to offer to bring our party and our country back together.
And I would not do this if I did not think I could be a good prime minister for Britain.
These are dark times for Labour. And they are dangerous times for our country.
A referendum designed to settle an argument inside the Conservative party has resulted in the country being torn apart. Our economy damaged. Our society hurt.
At this time, with a failed PM, and a tiny number of Conservative party members choosing the next one, our country needs a strong Labour Party.
We alone can hold this right wing Tory government to account and then replace it by winning a general election.
Jeremy Corbyn is unable to provide the leadership this huge task needs.
I believe I can.
I’m not a Blairite. I’m not a Brownite. I’m not a Corbynista. I am my own woman.
A strong Labour woman.
I believe in Labour as a force for good.
I am rooted in and proud of our party, and believe in my country.
I believe we are at our best when we come together to shape a future where everyone has opportunity, no matter what their background, no matter who they are. That is my mission in politics and in life.
I stand for hope not grievance.
I stand for equality, for social justice, for social mobility.
I am a practical socialist driven by a strong set of values who wants to get things done.
I was born in Yorkshire and grew up in Merseyside. My dad was a printer and my mum was a seamstress.
My parents taught me to work hard, respect others and always to stand up for the things I believe in. And that’s precisely what I’m doing today.
I went to a Comprehensive School and then to Oxford – the first in my family ever to go to university.
I came into politics when I saw the damage Thatcherism was doing to our communities. I wanted to change things then. I still do.
Whether you voted to Leave or Remain, there is no doubt that the result has left our country divided and uncertain.
Divided between young and old, between city and town, and between nation and nation. How we respond now will shape our future for generations to come.
This vote was a message from millions in our country who felt no one had listened to them for a very long time. For many, it was a howl of pain.
Now.. "How on earth do we bring hope to parts of our country that feel they have been neglected for years?”
“How do we protect jobs, investment and living standards?”
“How do we remain an open tolerant society?”
“And will we stay a United Kingdom?”
Labour was founded to be the voice of working people in Parliament. We have never just been a parliamentary party or just a movement.
We are both.
Everything we are proud of, from the NHS to the Minimum Wage to the Equality legislation that has modernized and civilized our society is there because we were in government.
I am not here for a Labour Party that just takes part. I’m here to win.
I will not stand back and allow Britain to become a one party Tory state. We owe too much to the millions in our country who look to us to help them make a better life.
This is certainly about uniting Labour but it’s about much more than that.
It’s about our democracy as well as our party.
It’s about giving hope to people all over the country that Labour can be an alternative government, ready and equipped to serve.
The blunt truth is the country does not believe that when they look at us right now. But they will if I win this fight.
And I need your help to win it.
I need those who want a better Labour Party and a better politics to join Labour now, to help me change Labour for the better.
I am a person who brings people together, I don’t drive them apart.
I will unite, I will not divide.
I can bring our Party together again.
A kinder politics must be a reality, not just an empty slogan.
The Tories may play out their game of thrones.
But they have nothing to offer on the questions this country now faces.
I love my party and I love my country.
We are at a crossroads.
I am ready to lead.

I guess that's not how it's going to work."This time, however, it will be different. Tory MPs will draw up a shortlist of two,
and then party members will have the final say, installing a new leader straight
to No 10. It's an historic first, and will trigger calls for an early election."

Re: Monday 11th July 2016
Will the Tories try to overturn the FTPA and go for a snap GE now?
Pros and cons please
Pros
1. Labour is in complete and catastrophic disarray. The leadership problems are well documented, but we now have a situation where 4/5 MPs have voted that they have no confidence in him and so cannot convincingly campaign for him to be PM. Annihilation for Labour in any campaign awaits.
2. The Tories are (relatively) united. the EU issue is more or less settled for them.
3. Ukip is weak. With no leader and no cause, they are in a feeble position
4. Lib Dems while expected to recover somewhat (especially in the south west) are weakly led, and at a low base.
5. It will remove any doubts over may's mandate.
6. May will be a fresh choice, leaders usually enjoy a temporary bounce when new.
Cons
1. they have nearly 4 years left to go.
2. Repealing the FTPA is a pain.
3. Events. Any election can give rise to problems.
4. There is no path by which Labour gets any better. It will be in just as much chaos in 2 years regardless of what happens in the leadership election.
5. Probably that Corbyn is returned as labour leader leading to ever more fun packed years of division and disorder for labour, which may be forestalled if labour loses an election.

Ah but that was different. probably.
But would Labour want a GE right now?
May might think that it's a way of securing a larger majority and a government until 2021.
Given that there needs a 2/3rds majority on a vote of no confidence, we could have the peculiar situation that Tories would vote for it with Labour voting against.

I agree. Even though it would be an absolute f***ing disaster for everybody involved, including the country, it would at least create a single way forward, and we would know where we stand. Up to our necks in sh*t, admittedly, but there would no longer be this terrible sense of drift in a thousand directions, each of them bad. Current Tory government have lost their mandate. Dave ran off without fulfilling his duties. Leave Tories ran off petrified of what they campaigned to achieve and refused to clean up their mess. A new Tory PM has been chosen without the slightest pretence of a democratically accountable selection by 150,000 Tory members. GE now.

Actually one good thing is that the bind that the Tories find themselves in now of their own making i.e. with Cameron resigning; will make the decision to have a Fixed Term Parliament without a clause for such an eventuality a really poor one.
Well done Dave - another masterstroke.

Early elections can be held only:
if a motion for an early general election is agreed either by at least two-thirds of the whole House or without division; or
if a motion of no confidence is passed and no alternative government is confirmed by the Commons within 14 days.

Indeed Roger. One by one, Dave's tactical, unprincipled manoeuvres will come back to haunt the Tories and the rest of us too probably.RogerOThornhill wrote:Actually one good thing is that the bind that the Tories find themselves in now of their own making i.e. with Cameron resigning; will make the decision to have a Fixed Term Parliament without a clause for such an eventuality a really poor one.
Well done Dave - another masterstroke.

Early elections can be held only:
if a motion for an early general election is agreed either by at least two-thirds of the whole House or without division; or
if a motion of no confidence is passed and no alternative government is confirmed by the Commons within 14 days.

Theresa May genuinely just won a leadership election by standing still and letting everyone else fall on the sword of their own ineptitude.
Yes, yes she did - and without having to say a single word about her policies.
Thank goodness we have rid ourselves of the tyrannical EU and got our country back!

As @andrealeadsom quits the race after the smear campaign I thank her for delivering #Brexit like a true leader. What an achievement!
On a level of wrongness rarely seen.

Ephie goes to bed with assorted gallstone-bashing pills for an hour and just look what happens!
Loathsome decides to disappear, probably because she was planning to anyway and was only standing so the party could lop Boris/whoever then Gove/whoever off the list, and the Queen of the May gets hr coronation as planned all along.
The Eagle landed (at last) and nobody noticed because at exactly the same time as she finally announced what she'd been pre-announcing for ever, Loathsome drops the stun grenade and the hacks scuttle off to report on that instead.
I turn my back for five minutes and the political landscape has changed again.
The Prime Minister is guilty of dereliction of duty, and is doing a runner. The Brexiters got what they wanted and they're doing a runner too.
The non-candidate for PM has now also buggered off, and left behind the only remaining candidate who has offered no policies whatsoever.
The PLP have put up their stalking horse and nobody was there to hear what she had to say; the "unity" she's demanding now is a long way away from the disunity she and her pals have created; and she now has the brass neck to claim she brings people together. FFS.
I can feel my inner MacEnroe screeching YOU CAN NOT BE SERIOUS!!!!!!!
We need a General Election. Right now.
