Polls have said that for a while now, as you said it is meaningless because its not how the damned thing works!

Though one does hear from time to time that many palace "insiders" are worried about Charles becoming king, and even that his mum agrees.......

Maybe she is hanging on until her last breath in the hope she may yet outlive him and thus solve the "problem"?

I don't think it has been, the church would need to be disestablished in England first

As an aside, my great-grandfather was an antidisestblishmentarian activist a century ago - He was so pleased when my mother left methodism and joined the CofE -much to the disgust of my godless trotskyite rabble rousing father - hey I'm a Green I can say the unspeakable words :)

I believe Charles wants to be the Defender of 'all faith' though - whatever that's supposed to mean.

London firms losing faith in quick-fix access to EU after Brexit - Reuters

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson also said in July he expected financial firms in the country to retain rights to sell within the EU, given the desire of European firms to have reciprocal access to London.
But many in the City of London, Europe's biggest financial centre, are having second thoughts about relying on such an equivalency fix as it will be Brussels not Britain that decides whether the rules are the same.

[Corbyn] said: “I hate the elitism [that says] only the wealthy can go to ballet, only the wealthy can go to opera, only the wealthy can
go to Glyndebourne, only the wealthy can enjoy what’s termed high-brow music. I don’t consider myself high-brow or wealthy, but
I still enjoy some aspects of classical music. I want everybody to have that attitude and that same experience.”

An SNP spokesperson said: "People listening to Jeremy Corbyn will be very surprised to hear him declaring that his six-figure
salary does not make him wealthy, another example of how out of touch Labour is with Scottish voters."
(my emphasis)

Rather catty, SNP spokesperson, and not a nice rendering of Corbyn's meaning. I don't imagine the SNP is happy with the Labour
leader just now. Corbyn has recently said something to the effect that the SNP tries to be socialist and fails. I think it made them
angry and that helps explain the mean comment about Corbyn's income.

Assuming the quote is accurate, (a big assumption nowadays), I agree. It's horrific to find out how little so many people earn - he's in the top 1% in the world, and I'm sure will be in the top 10% in the uk (someone with more time and less beer can check that). Inequality really ought to figure more highly in our political discourse, but with the politicians and the media all up there in the top few percent, there's precious chance of that.

Yes, we did have that debate some time ago, and I'm afraid that I started it.
Speaking as an ex-chemist, I thought at the time that it was an Americanism like "center" which had crept into English.
Looking at the Etymology of the word it seems that Sulphur was the preferred option from the 14th Century till the early 20th Century, when the preferred American spelling was adopted by IUPAC.
For me, IUPAC can sod off. I'm sticking with the old Latin form :D

Just the one local council by-election this week, but making history in a way:

Fife - Labour gain, officially from an Independent but in reality from the last elected Communist in Britain. This division split 1Lab/1Nat/1"Comm" in both 2007 and 2012 with the Indy-cum-Communist actually topping the poll on the first occasion - a by-election in 2014 saw Labour romp home with over 60% of the vote as anybody "far left" (whether officially Independent or not) absented themselves. This was a few months before the referendum, however, which of course transformed the political climate north of the border - that was reflected in the result now which saw Labour remain almost static compared with four years ago, still top of the poll but pressed by the SNP who increased by nearly 20 points since then; the swing was about 9% (and about 14% since the previous vacancy) though less than 5% since 2007 - as with previous by-elections here this emphasises that 2012 was a poor result for the SNP locally, as a council administration that had come in for a fair amount of flak lost control. Tories advancing here - as in most Scottish contests recently - but still below 10% in what is fairly fundamentally hostile territory for them. This time round, a Communist stood officially labelled as such - but the "fin de siecle" feeling of this vacancy was driven home when they could manage only 3% of the vote. The fairly cold comfort for them was that still proved enough to beat the Greens.

Five contests to start next month.
