From AAWs post last night:
http://www.verdict.co.uk/2017/01/12/gov ... laming-eu/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The government should support British industry instead of blaming the EU

Take last year’s threat to the British steel industry caused by China’s ‘dumping’ of cheap steel. Germany, France and Italy provided entirely legitimate support to their own industries, but Britain did not. The Conservative government’s hypocrisy reached its peak when it opposed stronger EU action to counter the dumping of Chinese steel on the European market.

The EU has trade defence instruments to deal with situations like this. EU governments have been trying for a while to strengthen them. But any agreement on doing so has been blocked by a minority of countries led by the British Conservative government. - See more at: http://www.verdict.co.uk/2017/01/12/gov ... f4Gxs.dpuf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks to Hindle for drawing attention to Wollaston's tweets last night.

Why on a Friday night I wonder, does it give her the weekend to prepare for a kicking from No 10?

How Theresa May plans to reduce immigration after Brexit
British government wants to impose immigration restrictions on ‘every sector and every skill level.’
By TOM MCTAGUE
a senior government official said that while “flexibility” would be built into the new system “to meet the needs of the economy,” the government wanted to control immigration across the board.

“To control people coming from Europe is the principle we are working towards,” the official said. “Every sector and every skill level will have some form of control.”

The new system will be tied to the government’s long-term economic strategy, under plans currently being developed by the Home Office and Department for Business, two senior government sources said.

But yeah, it would be pretty amazing if she wasn't highly dissatisfied with how things are at present.

Asking the impossible:
A cross-party group of MPs has urged Prime Minister Theresa May to make clear whether she intends to stay in the EU single market and customs union before Brexit talks begin at the end of March.
Am I missing something, or is there an EU input to negotiations? Whether we stay in the single market or CU isn't up to May.

The Brexit farce is so like the 2014 referendum, with Salmond saying we'll remain in the EU and have a currency union with E/W/NI, while the EU and Chancellor said "no you won't".

Unintentionally revealing I think.

It must have been utterly miserable to have been Hunt with that CLP. Reflects my experience. Many more won't stand in 2020. The party will have radically changed.

Corbyn has won already.

Corbyn has won already.
This also meant he didn't take as much of an interest in local politics as an MP should. Meetings with councillors were ad hoc and infrequent, local party strategy was something he fought shy of, and keeping the CLP happy wasn't a high priority. The latter undoubtedly helped contribute to it near-unanimously voting to endorse Jeremy Corbyn last summer. Unfortunately, like many Labour MPs, Tristram doesn't and didn't understand much the party or movement of which he is part, and didn't show interest in advice from staff and other local Labour people about how to navigate these choppy waters.
Hmm, Maybe some MPs could be more suited to a proportional representation system, in that the 'top up' number might allow some to not be so tied to a local area (if system could work that way).

Understand the view that not delivering Brexit would be bad - but am no longer convinced it would be worse. This turning back the clock 5 decades (and the rest) will put us back 5 decades. We may never recover. It's not inspiring and it demeans our nation tremendously.

From the article:
Ministers say they are providing an additional £528m a year for general practices by 2020-21 to ensure the target for providing seven-day opening is met by that date.

They say, however, that they are concerned by a recent National Audit Office finding that 46% of GP surgeries were still closing at some point during “core” weekday working hours – with 18% closing before 3pm a least one day a week – despite three-quarters of them having received extra funding to provide extended cover.
This is the problem with Tories, always attaching conditions to extra money that reflect their own ignorant (or politically corrupt) thinking rather than expert advice.
If pressure on A&E is caused by an aging population presenting more complex cases with multiple conditions, are more routine appointments for working people outside the Mon-Fri norm actually going to address the problem? These extra surgery hours would only create extra non-urgent appointments, as emergency/urgent out of hours appointments are already available.
Indeed, it immediately strikes me that GP surgeries closing early on a weekday may well be doing so in order for GPs to allocate more time to serious ill patients with home visits and rounds at local nursing homes, rather than seeing younger, healthier patients in surgery, who may be able to get by with a trip to the chemist with their cough or cold.
But then Theresa May probably knows all this and just doesn't care, seeing an opportunity to use people dying on hospital trolleys in corridors to push through further privatisation of primary care, even when they have no connection to each other. And still nothing on social care. Disgraceful.
