Re-posting Roger's Monbiot link of 12.03h

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... sts-brexit" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Trump’s extraordinary plan to cut federal spending by $10.5tn was drafted by the Heritage Foundation, which called it a “blueprint for a new administration”. Vought and Gray, who moved on to Trump’s team from Heritage, are now turning this blueprint into his first budget.

This will, if passed, inflict devastating cuts on healthcare, social security, legal aid, financial regulation and environmental protections; eliminate programmes to prevent violence against women, defend civil rights and fund the arts; and will privatise the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Trump, as you follow this story, begins to look less like a president and more like an intermediary, implementing an agenda that has been handed down to him.

In July last year, soon after he became trade secretary, Liam Fox flew to Washington. One of his first stops was a place he has visited often over the past 15 years: the office of the Heritage Foundation, where he spoke to, among others, Jim DeMint. A freedom of information request reveals that one of the topics raised at the meeting was the European ban on American chicken washed in chlorine: a ban that producers hope the UK will lift under a new trade agreement. Afterwards, Fox wrote to DeMint, looking forward to “working with you as the new UK government develops its trade policy priorities, including in high value areas that we discussed such as defence”.

How did Fox get to be in this position, after the scandal that brought him down in 2011? The scandal itself provides a clue: it involved a crossing of the boundaries between public and private interests. The man who ran the UK branch of Atlantic Bridge was his friend Adam Werritty,” etc
So there is a considerable team organising this Revolution …

The BBC’s Toady and other news programmes have insisted on interviewing these lobbyists as though they were really thinktanks . (Which has been infuriating me for several years now .)

Ignorance or collusion ?

No shortage of lettuces when I went shopping earlier. No lack of curved bananas either.

I popped into the Principality building society to ask if they had any better interest rates <laughs hysterically> on any of their savings accounts or bonds.
The young man said sadly not.
He then asked if I had considered taking out a funeral plan as they give about 6% interest on the savings. Wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry. Unfortunately it only pays out when you die and the money has to be spent on a funeral which put paid to my cunning plan to get the 6% and then cash it in early.

EU leaders round on Trump and reject May's bridge-building efforts

Prime ministers and presidents at Malta summit line up to scorn Trump’s conduct, accusing him of lack of respect
François Hollande in Malta.

European leaders launched a series of attacks on Donald Trump over his anti-EU rhetoric on Friday, accusing him of a lack of respect, as Theresa May’s attempts to act as a bridge with the new US president were roundly rejected at a summit in Malta. (Guardian)

Private ambulances increasingly used to respond to 999 calls

Figures for ambulance trusts in England showing sharp rise in spending on private operators add to concerns over NHS crisis

The London ambulance service (LAS) has had the biggest increase among England’s 10 regional ambulance trusts. The amount it spent on private ambulance providers soared from £700,000 in 2011 to £10.1m last year, a thirteen-fold increase. (Guardian - my emphasis)

Trump orders review that could relax Dodd-Frank bank rules

Mr Trump made it a campaign pledge to repeal and replace the Dodd-Frank act, which also created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

This US government agency seeks to make sure banks, lenders, and other financial companies treat US consumers fairly.

Dodd-Frank, named after the Congressmen who campaigned for the legislation, was introduced to rein in banks' risky practices by banks and other financial companies. (BBC News website)

It does look contrived, that and the facial hair growth he's lately sporting
he looks different each time in recent images
I knew this guy from his UKIP speaking and writing before I knew what he looked like
Not liking his politics, I think I'm less inclined to find his features easy on the eyes, you know?
I saw a picture of him and thought, 'an unpleasant-looking fellow'
The flyers he's sent out contain rude, disingenuous and personally disrespectful things about decent people
It's not attractive, right-wing nationalism

And what of Brexit, a day after May’s government published its white paper on the subject? It was curiously absent. Even the non-UK discussion after lunch was more about celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome rather than mourning Britain’s departure.

Not quite gasping, but a painful one for me too, a bit over forty years since I left for Luxembourg and thirty four since here in Normandy, working in Paris for some of it . Six grandchildren from 1 to 16 years old, and obviously well integrated .

I receive much sympathy for the Brexit Lunacy , but then we here also have a ghastly GE coming up !!!
