I started reading Sinclair Lewis' 1935 novel 'It Couldn't Happen Here' last night.
Penguin re-issued it recently.

Lewis uses humour to comment on views supporting creationism, racism, anti-worker and union sentiment, militarism hiding behind isolationism and ''peace'', the need for a ''strong leader'', America as the victim of Jews, commies, Europe.

Yvette Cooper defending John Bercow quite eloquently here.

If we invite leaders of once repressive regimes in response to their becoming more open and democratic, it's actually pretty logical that we would stop inviting leaders of democratic countries who are becoming more repressive. I think the Tories are in denial about what Trump represents. At least, I hope the Tories are in denial about what Trump represents and not admirers of his unconstitutional ways.

Anyone else listen to Starmer? The toys out of the pram line was a good one. Still a nuanced position to take so far as I can tell and, imho, a difficult one to explain to the majority of the public to get them on board. You'd like to think that getting key info of what WTO rules would actually mean to a person's everyday life, explain what we take for granted.

Hadn't realised that we were now up to 7 closures. trying to fit a move at 14 into an 11-18 edu system was always going to be dicey but these appear to be really badly run too which doesn't help.

Worth paying attention to for anybody who ever, for a moment, thinks that maybe the Republicans in congress won't be that bad and might hold Trump to account.

In a nomination hearing, where the whole point is to hold nominees to account whilst investigating their history, she was banned from criticising him by use of a Senate rule forbidding senators from demeaning other senators. Clive Lewis admits he is considering resigning today over article 50 bill

Clive Lewis, the shadow business secretary, has been speaking about today’s third reading vote on the article 50 bill, the BBC’s Norman Smith reports. And he has refused to confirm that he will vote for the bill. In other words, he has admitted that he is contemplating resignation. (There is a three-line whip on Labour MPs, and so if he does not vote for the bill, he would have to resign.) (Politics Live, Guardian)

So - nothing has really changed, then. Hardly newsworthy. ("So why post it"? I hear you all ask.)

I suppose it indicates that he thinks that things haven't changed for the better, though.

Locally, Elland Bridge reopens to traffic today after reconstruction following the Boxing Day floods in 2015.

Thankfully, as promised, the Government have invested heavily into ensuring the floods won't happen again.

In the Dom Cummings piece that was linked the other day, he said that he'd spoken to Boris about it the day after the vote and they were keen to do 100m/week, this was before tory reality set in.

Because of the definition of a 3 line whip. If he doesn't have to resign then Labour no longer has 3 line whips and collective responsibility is over.

Last summer none of them got a C in English and maths, but insiders at Oldham council - which has no direct control over the college - said they had struggled to have a conversation with its management in the days and weeks that followed.

It is understood concerns were then raised with the regional schools commissioner, who oversees academies.

In November the school’s board of trustees - headed up by venture capitalist Mike Dwan, whose Bright Tribe academy chain was last year investigated by the government over its finances - quit.

If there's anyone who shouldn't be allowed within a country mile of public money it's this one.
