I was at Orient that day.

We'd just won and given that we were pressing for promotion, this was significant to us. Filing out of the ground chatting and then news came over the tannoy.

Stunned silence. The whole ground went quiet as we left.

Can't begin to think about the impact on those who were actually there and witnessed it. But (allegedly) making up that you were there?

I think Nick Hornby captured the horror well.

If you stood at football in that era you'll have been in a crush. You'll remember being in a crowd where it was hard to breathe, or being a child lifted off your feet by the crowd, or being pressed against a barrier so you couldn't move (at least if you went to big games as I did). We laughed about it.

Then people died.

Maybe as a joke, but it has been obvious for 7 years he isn't coming back ever. Claiming that people seriously think he could is tilting at windmills. Nobody thinks that. The remaining Bitterite MPs are all looking for jobs elsewhere before the 2020 rush. They're trying to get out not come back.

Now you might say that is part of the problem. No guts for the fight, unlike Corbyn and McDonnell who spent 40 years in the wilderness. But I wouldn't (and didn't) stay. The Blairites have gone elsewhere.
