So...either:

1. Quick repeal of the Fixed term parliament Act or
2. Have her own backbenchers vote against her government to force the election.

Anyway, I guess we may as well just wait and see..... ;-)

Yes, that's more likely.

FTPA needs 2/3rds majority to overturn i.e. needing Labour support*, and would make the Tories look slightly ridiculous given that they only legislated for it in the last Parliament.

* anti-Corbynites might well go for it to oust him early after a crushing defeat and make a route back to power far quicker than leaving it until after 2020.

I cant think why she would call a GE before the boundary changes, and whilst she has corbyn where she wants him. TM is not a gambler, so if she is calling a GE, something horrid that could bring down the govt is on the horizon and she heeds a bigger majority.

Really good explanation of what happened under Thatcher and Reagan and how poisonous it still is to the function of productive capitalism.

I still feel Brexit is at least partially about protecting UK dependent tax havens from EU scrutiny. Which is why I feel Labour should support continued membership of the single market and help the EU shine a light on their activities, rather than support a withdrawal from close co-operation.

June 8th.

With France and Germany also occupied with elections, it possibly doesn't cost too much in terms of negotiations, which the civil service can continue to prepare for.

Corbyn has said he'd vote for an election. Anyone think May could fail to get one? Or is she right to be confident?

Labour have cash.

Dream result, Corbyn hammered on 4th May (a certainty), snap resignation, unopposed unity candidate (Starmer), knife fight in June.

Most likely utter and total Corbyn meltdown in June, Tory majority 140.

Here is Tim Farron, the Lib Dem leader, on the announcement.

This election is your chance to change the direction of our country.

If you want to avoid a disastrous hard Brexit. If you want to keep Britain in the single market. If you want a Britain that is open, tolerant and united, this is your chance.

Only the Liberal Democrats can prevent a Conservative majority.
Tim Farron was doing well there until he got to the last line. Utter nonsense. The Libdems might be able to take some seats back from the Tories but they need a strong showing from Labour to prevent a Conservative majority.

Social care was pretty high up the agenda, with the Dilnott report. I really couldn't believe how easily the Tories were able to jettison their manifesto promises once they won their majority. Now with Brexit it's hard to see how to get it back to centre stage, but I'd definitely like to see something concrete from Labour on this in preference to blank cheques for the triple lock, which, with rising inflation, will hoover up money that could be spent more effectively elsewhere.

Ahem, I shall be voting Green. But yes, its going to be vile, Corbyn is goinng to have more knives in his back by the end of the campaign than Caligula.

The polls will harrow with purdah, though, and the lib dems are going to win seats in lib/tory marginals - may's sure thing landslide may come back to bite her...

What Im going to be watching with interest is claims of Putinbot/russian influence if Labour do better than is assumed by the bitterite commentariat.

The Tories can run a vote Farron get Corbyn campaign if there is a pact. Besides Labour voters in the South will mostly vote Lib Dem where they haven't got a sitting Labour MP.

Realistically the challenge is avoiding wipeout in the Midlands and bits of the Labour heartlands.
