Tory government ignore their duties, allow poor building maintenance, for example, and react after tragedy forcing people to work through the night. Forcing workers into unsafe work patterns to save on the cost of hiring a full crew is unacceptable.

Thank you, agreed
It's not just London this kind of hyper-compartmentalised neighbourhood classification system operates
People are judged, in part, based upon where they live, whether they rent or own

The rules governing how much water can be taken from rivers have not been updated for more than half a century and take no account of the water needed to sustain the ecological health of rivers. The government published proposed reforms in 2011 and had legislation drawn up early in 2017, but did not find parliamentary time to act.

The driest October-to-March period for 20 years this year was followed by an extremely dry April and below average rainfall in May, and has left much of Britain with low river and groundwater levels and facing the possibility of drought. The information released to WWF by the Environment Agency shows that in such conditions 23% of England’s rivers could run dry. Further data shows that more than 550 rivers and lakes are in a poor ecological state because too much water is being taken from them.

- Damian Carrington
Quarter of England’s rivers at risk of running dry, finds WWF

Indeed,I cringe at the description of my part of village as "posh end"doing my best to dispel the myth and bring house prices down ,they had to literally give it away next door for someone to buy, as my patriotic duty.

Has Theresa May thought of using these words for her next assault on the EU -

"Mills and Boon"? "Derry and Toms" (very red white and blue, that one)? "Black and Decker"? I'm sure there are loads more off-the-shelf ones if she's running out of ideas. Of course, no-one will know what she's on about, by why change a winning formula?

Ministers in abrupt U-turn over fire safety in schools

Government goes back to drawing board after deciding that cost-cutting rules ‘would have been a disaster’ in light of Grenfell Tower disaster

Controversial government proposals to relax fire safety standards for new school buildings as a cost-cutting measure are to be dropped by ministers in a major policy U-turn following the Grenfell Tower fire.

The move is evidence of a dramatic change of approach across government, from a previous preoccupation with deregulation and cost-saving to a safety-first attitude, in the aftermath of the west London tower block tragedy. (Guardian)

Was it though, or was it one of those places that you think of as in one place but are strictly speaking in another? I was born a mile or so 'less east' in the London Borough of Newham, and I know that now Ilford, just to the north, is in the London borough of Redbridge. Looking it up, it's been the municipal borough of Barking, and later the london borough of barking and dagenham, since 1931 - if it was in Essex before then you were young indeed.
