Donald Trump wants schools to be on the "offensive" and not on the "defensive". (I just heard him say it on the TV news.) Teachers to shoot first and ask questions later?

You know, I think there might be something in that.

I strongly suspect that at least part of him never really wanted to win, just as some leading Brexiteers were equivocal about actually winning the referendum.

EU 'one step ahead' of Michael Gove on plastic straw ban

I presume they will take into account the not insignificant amount of people that need them.
Banning seems a little extreme and I'm not sure the article is saying the EU is planning to as such. There are targets to eliminate single use plastic. In the case of fast food outlets this means making changes not just to straws but also the plastic lids they put them in, I would have thought. Meanwhile, plastic straws for use at home aren't necessarily 'single use' as you could wash and reuse them. When I used to work in a pub when I was younger we had a regular customer with cerebral palsy who always requested a straw with his beer. Although you can certainly get paper straws, it's not easy (although when I was young they were always paper so plastic must have been better or cheaper or we would have kept using them) I don't know how well paper would perform with beer, so I'm not supportive of a complete ban.

We have reduced plastic bags enormously without banning them and I have to say sometimes they come in very handy, such as for packing the kids cookery ingredients for school. We need to reduce use of all plastics, not ban a few indiscriminately. Indeed, with all the plastic in the world, I'm not entirely sure why straws are suddenly in the Tories' sights. Have they all got shares in paper straws or something? I mean, just at random, what about crisp packets? Wherever there's a hedge there's an old crisp packet stuck in it. A lot needs to change on plastic and it's big business that needs to change to really make a difference, not parents throwing the occasional kid's party.

Useful Twitter thread on Gates. We don't know what Gates knows, but it's the pressure he could put on Manafort to flip that appears to be the biggest threat to Trump.

SethAbramson
There's no question the Gates plea puts enormous pressure on Manafort to cut a deal or else spend the rest of his life in prison. And remember that Trump told friends—per NBC—that Manafort could hurt him if he flipped. So this breaking news is a big deal.
BTW, Seth Abramson got a reputation on Twitter for this stuff because he accurately predicted some months beforehand that the first indictments would come in late November. At that time he predicted the next big moves from Mueller would come around March, so it's certainly worth keeping an eye on.
