Morning all.

Happy 50th Birthday to the OU!

I didn't know it at the time but starting an OU degree in the mid-90s was literally a life-changing decision.

Besides my specialism, I learnt so much along the way about other things that I would never have looked at otherwise.

I had a wobbly patch around 1999-2001 where work got in the way of studying.

I began a really interesting course on post-war France and Italy which I wasn't able to finish due to being in Lisbon for half of my time over the summer in 1999. I did wonder at the time whether I was actually going to complete my degree but fortunately work calmed down and I carried on.

True colours showing through I see...
The Brexit Party

@brexitparty_uk
.@Fox_Claire is standing for The Brexit Party as someone from the left.

This isn't about left or right, this is about democracy.

Love the idea that she is "someone from the left"!

And Spiked have said that they're supporting The Brexit Party too. Another of their ranks - and who is a governor at the East London Science School - is also standing as a candidate for them.

So what happens if Trump is impeached before he arrives for the State visit?

That would be slightly embarrassing I think. HMQ might well be a bit miffed.

This is rather good on the politics of immigration:
“The secret by which the capitalist class maintains its power”: the effect of anti-immigration rhetoric
https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/politicsandpoli ... -rhetoric/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This sums up for me what is at the heart of the right-wing, Tory attitude to immigration and why they so dislike the EU and want to leave it:
The real threat to the labour movement is not foreign migrant workers or open borders. It is false that open borders serve the interests of the ruling elites. Under capitalism, employers do not favour the movement of people as such. They favour the movement of people without rights. They favour the workings of an agency like the state that unilaterally controls practices of entry and thereby renders migrants and native workers vulnerable to the discretion of ruling elites.
