Good posts by Sky late last night. Flour moths are actually a thing!
I agree with the comments about the Tory MPs who know they will never be part of a Johnson government and that they may see other careers as more attractive. A related calculation could be simple electoral prospects where a Remainy seat is vulnerable in particular to Lib Dem opponents.
Fingers crossed.

Morning.
Kitten no 2 has just returned from the vets with a positive assessment after previously having experienced some complications after neutering.
Last day of school too, so I'm hoping for a little respite from stress and worry. Should last until Tuesday with a bit of luck, after which I'll be hitting the yoga and meditation hard to keep my blood pressure under control as we enter the era of Boris...

Re: Friday 19th July 2019
It's a good article by Wren-Lewis but people are a bit rubbish at being practical rather than emotional about their vote. Labour was the best bet to stop Cameron in 2010 & 2015 and to stop May in 2017 but it wasn't enough on any of those occasions and I'm not sure it will be enough now. People need something to vote for as well as against and it's quite hard to see where that positivity comes from while Labour is straightjacketed by the EU referendum result. The UK took a path in 2015 that it's becoming increasingly difficult to plot a way out of that which can both respect Labour ideals and command support among a majority of voters.HindleA wrote:https://mainlymacro.blogspot.com/2019/0 ... e.html?m=1

Except that Labour significantly shifted its Brexit position recently, and this seems to have caused a modest improvement in its poll position.
(of course it didn't satisfy the Remainiac fundamentalists, but not much will at this point)

Of course; that's why so much money and time go into advertising.
Not voting Labour in 2010 & 2015 was a mistake, yes. I agree with you about people needing something positive to vote for. I also think we're in a politically unique situation right now. Everyone not independently wealthy already with private healthcare coverage somewhere are going to be in some pretty shit with Tory government's continued leadership. That's most of us in a tough spot. We're not going to find positive reasons for a Labour government in most media; it won't be published.

Labour hold in the Northumbria PCC election, despite an Independent challenge being augmented by the ridiculous Supplementary Vote system.

George Osborne has backed Johnson's bid for Tory leadership since June of this year. I wasn't aware of this until recently.
Re: Friday 19th July 2019
The Green pitch from Corbyn in the last PMQs was a good call. Tactical Green voters are going to be important in a GE. I hope Labour doesn't waste money squabbling over Brighton and Bristol like it has in the past. It's not so much a case of left-leaning parties coming together, as simply getting out of each other's way.AnatolyKasparov wrote:Except that Labour significantly shifted its Brexit position recently, and this seems to have caused a modest improvement in its poll position.

As for Labour's Brexit policy, it's still looking like damage limitation rather than an enthusiastic, principled policy pitch to me, which is the point I'm trying to make. Labour need more than trying not to upset potential anti-Tory voters, though not upsetting them obviously helps.

Some of us still remember Farage's both ridiculous and sinister speech the morning after the referendum, particularly the grotesque "without a shot being fired".
F*** him.

The phrasing of this - hopelessly biased.
Labour will vow to bring billions of pounds of public services back in house in fresh blow to outsourcers
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/20 ... landlords/
No, it's bringing things back which should never have been outsourced!
Outsourcing companies have, until recently, grown fat on things being chucked their way due to an ideology that says that the private sector is always better - and that includes Blair's government which had this idea too.
Labour will vow to bring billions of pounds of public services back in house in fresh blow to outsourcers
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/20 ... landlords/
Labour is set to mount a fresh assault on business with the shadow chancellor expected to set out plans to bring billions of pounds worth of outsourced public services back in house if it wins power.
John McDonnell is understood to have drawn up draft laws that would force government departments to favour providing services themselves unless absolutely necessary.
That would prove troublesome for the likes of Serco and G4S, which run prisons and house asylum seekers, and Capita, which assess benefits claims and runs Whitehall IT systems.

Sir Richard Dalton (former UK ambassador to Iran) seems to sympathise with Iran and suggests that Jeremy Hunt stop pissing about with the Conservative leadership contest, and get back to his day-job (I paraphrase).
