Same for me too - wife's working tonight so has the chance of delivering the first baby in 2015.TheGrimSqueaker wrote:Rightio, night all. It's Mapp & Lucia and Mr Holland's Hootenanny for me ... living the dream eh!

Quite enjoying Mapp and Lucia - long time fan of the books but think that the Mapp and Georgie characters are too intent on mimicking the ones played by Prunella Scales and Nigel Hawthorne in the 80s series. Good fun though.

Have a Happy New Year's Eve everyone and I'm going to make a toast to absent friends and family later.
For now, I'll enjoy some escapism with the deliciously good looking Chow Yun-Fat in "The Replacement Killers" on MovieMix followed by "LA Confidential" on ITV4 .... if I last that late. Both films I've seen before.

Sticking it out till past the midnight hour, though without a clue as to what I'm going to do whilst this armpit of a year drains away.
Here's to a brighter, shinier, much happier and fulfilling 2015 to all of us here, to all those we care about, individually or collectively, and all those who so desperately need it.
But then such a lot depends on that little day in May, doesn't it?

Happy New Year to everyone - sorry it's late, only just got the last revelers out the door and the pub washed and scrubbed, ready to open the doors again in nine and a bit hours' time, and I've still got to get home and have a sarnie - it's a long time since bacon'n'egg o'clock. Woe, I said WOE, is me...
Anyhoo, huge thanks again to you all for being you all, and, as I saw someone post somewhere, and which I'm shamelessly stealing, may I wish a preposterous New Year to one and all
And as for 2015? Well.....

Well, been to friends in Irwell Vale who fed us with steak pie and lots of fizz. Also played Matchmaker, a gcard game of Jane Austen inspiration - very good indeed. After three games, still hadn't won but settled down to watch a a bit of Snow White before the fireworks down in London.
Everyone's now asleep or heading that way, so I guess this is where I wish everyone a very happy 2015 and the outcome you wish for yourselves and kin.
I mean it, and, belatedly and probably embarassingly, this is where I get to tell you that I love yez all...

Evening. Nope, morning. Happy new year all.
Someone (Toby?) mentioned 'reasons to be fearful' on charlie brooker's review of the year - I thoroughly recommended Black Mirror once before (still haven't watched the recent christmas special) and will thoroughly recommend them again (Parental Advisory - they are tough tough stories on the whole that make worrying and thought provoking points, particularly 'White Bear' which might be the best single drama I've ever seen) and I'd also thoroughly recommend the review of the year, for the Blockheads, obviously, but also for almost all of Brooker's stuff, and especially for the five minutes of Adam Curtis that he smuggled into the middle.
Charlie Brooker's 2014 wipe ishere on iPlayer
Black Mirror is on 4od here (the link is to White Bear but you can link from the page to any of the episodes - they are thematically linked but are all stand alone dramas)

Wishing you all a truly satisfying 2015 with good health, joy, contentment and some great adventures. Let's have a preposterously successful year as we gird our loins and take back our tolerant, open-hearted, open-minded, caring, and empowering country ~ one that remembers that no-one is entirely self-made and that everyone deserves the dignity of a decent roof over their head, good food in their belly, an excellent well-funded NHS, great education at any stage of life, a social-life, and the possibility of finding the work that suits them at a wage that sustains them. If we don't dream we can't create so let's dream on!
If you haven't seen the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures this year, I strongly recommend them to you via iPlayer or your favourite catch-up service:

Mapp and Lucia was fun but, as someone said above, it did seem very much a recreation of the Prunella Scales version ~ and so I'm diving back into the books!

An excellent piece on the disaster that 2015 onwards would be under Osborne. After watching the Krugman clip from 2012 shared yesterday it was good to get a reminder of the naked disaster capitalism that is being done under the pretext of solutions to the global financial crisis.
I shudder to think what Cameron and Osborne will cook up to bugger the UK further prior to the election.

Capitalist with everything stacked in his favour - off shore companies, secured loans instead of shareholdings, ability to take money out whenever he feels like it - in favour of far smaller state. I'm shocked etc...
These people really are repellent individuals.

Re: Weds 31st December 2014 & Thurs 1st January 2015 - NEW Y
Good morrow, Peasants!
Lady Jacobia heah - with your instructions for the coming year.
If you are hung over, you have only yourselves to blame. There's work to be done and foxes to shoot, so get up and take your orders!
Those of you who have been given the right to vote (which is, obviously, an abomination because you don't own any land) will be expected to vote for the One True Blue Conservative Party. Failure to do so will result in the sack. And no references, either!
I am convinced that the little brown person masquerading as a party leader for the labourers is some sort of foreigner, so if I catch you voting for him there really will be trouble. He's probably French, and we all know what they're like. Garlic and big noses.
As you all know, having benefited from my largesse over the festive period, you have had quite enough mince pies and Cook will make no more.
Even that parvenu Lady Jenkin thinks that porridge is the thing, so take note from your betters and get your oats. Regularly.
Jonty has opined that it might be a jolly good wheeze to put you all on these new contracts that are called zero-hours or somesuch. Excellent idea! You will still be required to start work at 5am blackleading the grates etc. and we will expect our kedgeree at 7.30 as usual - however, you will have to start early from your new homes, as henceforth your tied hovels will be rented out to Americans for what they call vacancies or whatever and you can rent a box from the Hon Gervase who has purpose-built ones for you at very reasonable rents. Off you pop, and don't use the horseboxes to move your stuff because you haven't got much anyway and what there is should be burnt. Travel light, I say!
It is entirely possible that the Romanian gypsies living in the coppice might do the cleaning for some firewood over the next few weeks, so don't be surprised if your services aren't required all the time. You have been pampered far too long, and it's high time you stood on your own two feet (if you still have them, or even if you've just the one) and got on with it - I have been assured by Dr.Maximus, the vet, that there's nothing wrong with any of you, so don't pretend that there is. We don't approve of shirkers in this femily.
I will desist from wishing you a Happy New Year, because you lower orders are incapable of happiness due to the circumstances you were born into. Hardly your fault, but as you know, work will set you free and you need to buck your ideas up.
Now that the vicar has opened his food bank, whichever one of you is the under-footman (one has so many one forgets) might nip along to get some tins of soup for the servants. I have no intention of sharing my swan.
Toodlepip!

Toodlepip!

My New Years resolution was to sign up here properly, after two years of lurking, so I just want to say hello to all and to thank you for helping to keep me sane. (And special thanks to TGS for reminding me to reread the Hogfather, only about the fourth reading for me.)
I am another of the Bolshevik socialist republic of Wales contingent. I was rather upset to see on your terms and conditions that abusive posts are not allowed. Can't I be slightly abusive about my MP, the oleaginous fox hunter Simon Hart?
Here's hoping for 2015

For me, you can be as rude as you like about your MP. Is he Tory by any chance?

Has the Guardian been up to it's underhand tricks again (with Ed's new year message) or was it a mistake? Hmm, know what I think.

When was the video made? Last year or this year?
If this year, surely there is a big gaff in the video at the 02:20 - 02.29 mark when he says we will be relentlessly focused on the cost of living crisis in.. 2014!

It's too much to ask the Graun to upload the correct video that's for sure. Thankfully we still have the BBC who can get it right.
The Graun have had numerous tweets throughout Wednesday, telling them they had uploaded the wrong video but nope, they haven't bothered to change it. That's either incompetence or a deliberate strategy to encourage abuse BTL by posters too thick to understand that the video is a cock up by the Graun, not by EM.
Anybody wishing to see the correct video should look at the BBC website where the staff have at least bothered to get it right.

I hadn't watched the Miliband video but posted below the line on that article containing it. Some commentators were guffawing remarking Miliband got his year wrong. Seemed to take great delight in his 'mistake'.daydreamer wrote:Has the Guardian been up to it's underhand tricks again (with Ed's new year message) or was it a mistake? Hmm, know what I think.

Except it wasn't Miliband's mistake, was it.
Look alive, people, my friends! Check sources, check sources & check sources some more - I'm sorry it's not easier because we all work hard enough already. Mistakes will happen, that's unfortunate but I accept it's part of our journey.
Lies are within my control - I don't tell them. It's a waste of everyone's time, especially mine.
Welcome, Tonibel! Another voice, another friend from one of the most beautiful places in the world! What riches I enjoy from you & our friends here - priceless. Please accept my gratitude for being here.
What if there was a FlyTheNest website & no one posted anything? It'd have no value, like a plot of land with nothing growing from it where a garden or home or environmental refuge for wildlife or carbon sink or hiking trail used to be. Useless, in other words, valueless. A void.
That's like democracy, civic engagement, communicating effectively in order to get your needs met & have some fun too - it must have participation from us because we are the democracy.
It can get contentious, you know? Good. I learn a lot when I'm contradicted.
Happy New Year.
I love you.
xx

Happy New Year everyone & a big welcome to Tonibel.
Here's to a year where the political charlatans get found out via the ballot box, and people think long and hard about how their vote will best serve all of us in the UK, particularly those that need most help.

Welcome @Tonibel ~ and here's to overturning your current MP's majority in May
To whomever holds the power to do an FTN tweet: would it be a good idea to tweet AS and Martin Rowson about the Graun's posting of Ed M's 2014 NY message?

I've sent Lady Jacobia off for a nap after luncheon.
As me, I'd like to say Hello Tonibel and yes I'm one of they lefties over the death border too!
Re. Ed's message - I think it's deliberate. Cue Blue Meanies saying there's no difference - which is a jolly good thing because the message is that we can do better than this and the Tories need to go before this country is ruined permanently.
My vain hopes for 2015 are - that someone attempts to assassinate IDS; that not one more claimant dies unnecessarily (or kills themselves) and get found with their DWP letters telling them how unworthy they are; that no more people get made redundant on zero notice; that the NHS doesn't grind to a halt and people are left with nowhere to go; that food banks slowly disappear.......I could go on......
My real hope for 2015 is that the general election returns a Labour government.
