Morning all.

Good morning, everyone.
It's cold.
I'm wearing four layers, scarves and an outdoor coat indoors to keep warm.

this is unacceptableUK care workers use up leave to avoid losing pay while sick with Covid
Failure to pay some staff’s wages in full while off sick raises fears they will keep working rather than self-isolate

Not protecting workers, not paying them enough, no meaningful support from businesses or government in a wealthy nation
it's unacceptable

A Twitter thread on the NHS proposals:

You have been warned.
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Basically, removing competitive tendering is not taking services back in-house, it's removing the performance-related safeguards we have with the current system so more NHS services can be doled out wholesale without competition in the same way track and trace was.Keep Our NHS Public@keepnhspublic·

(2/5) Media coverage emphasised that Johnson is taking private contracting out of #NHS
He’ll be pleased - nothing further from truth
It refines direction of travel from Andrew Lansley Cons. to a more organised, less chaotic Johnson Govt version
You have been warned.

Trying to sneak such stuff in "under the radar" would certainly not surprise me.

I don't think Johnson does 'under the radar'AnatolyKasparov wrote:Trying to sneak such stuff in "under the radar" would certainly not surprise me.
he's a disaster area
(cJA bold)According to the draft white paper, the government is planning to reduce the role of the private sector in NHS England and give the health secretary greater control.
NHS commissioners would not be required to put contracts out to tender, which can draw competition from competing health groups. Instead, a new policy would leave the NHS and local authorities to run services and encourage them to work together more effectively.

National Health Service gone
no funding
that's the NHS gone

I haven't looked up Scotland's dataAnalysis in this bulletin includes deaths from week 1 2020 through to week 3 2021, to ensure full coverage of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Using the most up-to-date data we have available, the number of deaths up to 22 January 2021 was 668,567.
Of the deaths registered by 22 January 2021, 103,394 mentioned COVID-19 on the death certificate.
This is 15.5% of all deaths in England and Wales.

I haven't seen it
Mr. citizen has
I'm surprised it's taken this long for something like this to happen
pressure, tension, frustration, fear
cooped up with children or alone for too long
no hugging between friends
suffocating stench of burning substances rising up from the flat directly below
appliances broken
it's like how I remember stories about the former Soviet Union
dreary shortages of consumer goods
freezing cold
I never thought I'd get old
I'm not depressed it's worse than that
I'm calm cold and aching
Stoke new infections still high and it's sorrowful, the year-long accumulation of deaths

@BestForBritain
Oh good grief.
Secretary of State writes to the Commission to complain that a particular sort of trade “which has been in place for many years” is no longer permitted.

Yes.Alexander Clarkson
@APHClarkson
My suspicion is that this UK government will eventually completely reverse course on SPS check alignment with the EU, pretend nothing has changed and suffer barely a whimper of Tory MP rebellion as well as no consequences from voters in England
It's as likely that after aligning with the EU on SPS checks, much of UK media will praise Johnson and Gove for their pragmatism
