Very few people (outside anti-vax cranks, anyway) have ever said "its just a cold".

I'm sure Ben Goldsmith's non-dom status has nothing to do with his effusive praise of Mr Sunak.

Today is the 30th anniversary of the 1992 general election.

Maybe only beaten by 2015 as one where the "wrong" side so clearly won.

From this, I'm guessing that Boris Johnson has decided not to make any moves against Rishi Sunak, at least in the near-ish future.

Rishi "all laws have been followed" Sunak may have missed the lecture on law setting the minimum standards of expected behaviour.

Quick, someone chuck Johnson's stuff out on the street and change the locks of No10 while he's off cosplaying Churchill.

I don't always agree with Paul Mason but telling this Putin loving war crime denying Kremlin apologist to fuck off was undeniably the correct thing to do.

Stop the Press, Nick Cohen makes no mention of Corbyn !
" For all that, demonising Ukrainian refugees challenged even this government’s dark storytellers. They were overwhelmingly women and children, whose men had stayed behind to fight. They were fleeing an unprovoked invasion, by – and since we were talking about colonialism – a fascistic imperial power. The world could see the crimes against humanity the Russians were inflicting on civilians.

Undeterred, Patel insisted that among the desperate and traumatised were Russian spies. “I’m afraid it is naive and misguided to think that only men can be covert operatives,” she told a Conservative party conference last month. “There are those who would come to our country, who would mean us harm and who plot to strike at our very way of life.”

Read that disgraceful justification for visa controls again and compare it with the Russian state’s attempt to brainwash its subjects into believing Ukrainians are Nazis. There is the same contempt for evidence. "

Macron looks to be clearly leading le Pen in the first round of the French election.

If those exit polls are right then superficially it looks like Le Pen would stand no chance in the second round. She's hoovered up most of the right wing vote and is still behind Macron. It's hard to see where she's going to get the votes she needs. Presumably most of Zemmour's supporters will vote for her but there's nowhere near enough of them.

I was listening to Friday night's Radio 4 Any Questions while cooking earlier and just thought I should mention a truly outstanding performance from the Conservative MP David TC Davies. On an otherwise all female panel he was patronising, arrogant and belligerently unpleasant. He claimed the criticism of Sunak was down to envy of his wealth and suggested criticism of Sunak's wife was racist. He said the person who most inspired him as a child was Margaret Thatcher (the other panelists chose children's authors) and amongst other nonsense blamed farmers for their labour shortages. Apparently said shortages have nothing to do with Brexit or immigration but were the farmer's own fault because they don't pay enough to attract lazy dole scum who were also to blame because...I dunno, they have mobile phones and televisions or something.

Minette Batters, President of the National Farmers' Union, was on and sounded like she wanted to punch him while angrily pointing out they pay above the living wage. If I'd been on the panel (while cooking) I'd have taken my flat bottomed wok and applied it forcibly to various areas of his head multiple times. In an ideal world it would have made a satisfying 'bong' noise every time.

Said MP (who is not to be confused with David Davi*s*, though he often is) has always been a bellend.

France election: calls begin for voters to block far-right Le Pen

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/ ... cond-round
For many of France’s almost 48 million voters, this will be a difficult time, particularly for those on the left of the political spectrum. Many will be asking themselves whether to select what they consider the least bad option between the centrist Emmanuel Macron or far-right Marine Le Pen, or stay at home and not vote at all.
So pretty much the same as this country then. The only difference is that in France Le Pen has completely defeated the centre right while here the supposed centre right has absorbed the Faragist far right by accepting most of its views and policies.

The kingmakers however are the left. Mélenchon supporters there and Corbyn supporters here.

Do you sit on your hands in ideological purity and let some fucking shit run your country or do you compromise for the good of everyone?
