According to the Telegraph he is a 59 year old member of the Staffordshire party (not an MP, as you point out); actually, likely to be an ex-member very shortly, as he anticipates being expelled by the Tories following his comments this morning.

Discrimination claim cases against Welsh employers have dropped 40% since the Coalition's new £1,200 charge to bring a case.

It obviously hits the lowest paid most, less likely to be able to afford to pay the fee.
My other half spent a lot of his career in human resources at a fairly high level, and he has always maintained that workers' ability to challenge at tribunal is vital to keep employers working honestly and fairly. But Tories/Lib Dems obviously disagree.

It was mentioned earlier (I think it might have been on the CiF reader's blog) that there's been surprising little reporting of those Salmond-masked Tory protesters getting a bit physical with Miliband. I've just been in a Twitter conversation about those silly paid protesters that all parties seem to send out to ruin photo ops and I mentioned it and they didn't believe me until I linked the story from the Mirror. Fair to say very few people are even aware of it.

I had a cover lesson yesterday for a y10 citizenship class, and I was given a good basic 'this is uk democracy' PowerPoint to use, but instead we just talked about what they knew for about half an hour and then watched bits of the Thursday night debate. They were a good lefty group who related Cameron's answers about zhc to their family experience and took great pleasure in telling me how much they hated ukip. It was the second nicest cover lesson I've ever had.

Western Isles (no, I'm not going to try reciting the "official" Gaelic title ) - Independent gain from Labour who did not stand this time (not an uncommon development in an area where personal votes are still very important) as they beat the SNP by roughly 3 to 2 in a straight fight. This division split 2 Independent/1 Labour in both 2007 and 2012, and much of the former Labour vote seems to have gone to the Nats, who notably improved on their foray last time even if they did not win.

Moray - SNP gain from Independent on the first round of voting, with a swing of over 17% since 2012 and some 20% since a by-election here in early 2014 in a division that split 2 Indy/1 SNP both last time and in 2007. The swing may be exaggerated by only one Independent standing this time rather than the usual assortment (as was also the case in the previous by-election) but this was still another obviously strong SNP performance. Tories third and last, but with an advance of about 5% on both 2012 and the by-election - still no Labour candidate here since 2007, even though they polled decently then.

West Lothian - SNP hold in a division which split 1 Independent/ 1 Nat/ 1 Labour in both 2012 and 2007, on both occasions an SNP councillor turned Indy topped the poll (gaining over half of first preferences last time) This time round, a different independent candidate finished third with little over 20% - both the SNP and Labour benefited from the large Indy decline, but the Nats more so; there was a swing of about 5% to them from Labour compared to both the last two contests. Tories a distant fourth but still doubling their share on last time, Greens last in their first outing here with a little over 2%.

Two contests next week, one of them on Wednesday.

I'm disturbed by the encounter. I'm not surprised it occurred. Ed Miliband knows what he's getting himself into. His domestic & foreign policies are not going to be popular with some people.

I'm not suggesting his recent encounter with masked assailants is in any way connected to my example of a possible unpopular policy below.

For example, it is good & just, in my opinion, he supports official recognition of Palestine & a genuine, active commitment to securing justice for the Palestinian people. This principled stance isn't typical. I've every reason to believe Ed Miliband has formed his position genuinely interested in securing greater justice for people in the world. Again, he can't be ignorant of anomosity his position may bring him.

Yes, my impression was that Miliband didn't want to make an issue out of it. I don't know if it's wise or not. However, I think Miliband knows exactly what he's doing. Edited to add, I trust his judgement.

So much depends on the young. It's a big responsibility but that gives me hope.

Whether it's a case of not knowing or of not caring re Justine Miliband's non-Jewishness (is that a word?), I'm sure that the motivation behind making the comment was to have a pop at Ed Miliband's Jewishness. Offensive and totally unacceptable.

If the trade unions are smart though, they'll point out to would be members that once they're actual members, if they are in a position where they need trbunal representation, then that's exactly what union membership would confer, assuming the case isn't rubbish. My missus has helped out hundreds of members over the years and truned desperate situations for members into ones where they get substantial payoffs, improved redundancies, damages, compensation, great retirement packages and more, knowing that she's backedup by Thompson's in Liverpool, a law firm that acts frequently for Unite and has never acted for an employer.

The Tories and FibDems are beneath contempt, and both are lower than vermin, such is their haste to side with the bosses and deny ordniary working people their rights. Contemptuous and contemptible. How anyone could consider voting for them makes me shake my head in wonderment. I do hope that Tory and FibDem voters find themselves in a future situation where they're not union members and employers ride roughshod over their rights - the ones they'd deny to others.
