Don't forget there will be Council elections in some areas as well as the GE.
Although we have little chance of unseating our Conservative MP, it's looking promising for Labour gains on our Tory locked council...

Re: Wednesday 8th April 2015
GraunFor the first time since early 2015, Labour leads - albeit by one seat - in the Guardian’s latest projection of polls.
Miliband’s party is projected to win 273 seats, and Cameron’s 272.
On the surface of things Lord Ashcroft’s latest batch of 10 constituency polls shows little change since he last polled these seats last year.
In fact in nine of the seats the figures show a consolidation of the previous numbers - with both parties increasing their lead where they are still ahead, and Pudsey remaining a tie.
However, there are three important things to consider here:
First, in the one seat where the result has changed, Harrow East, a three point Tory lead is now a four point Labour one.
Second, these are all seats the Conservatives won in 2010. In four of these, Labour now leads. Possibly stating the obvious, but for every one of these seats the Tories lose, they need to gain two elsewhere to make up the loss.
Third, the UKIP share had fallen significantly – by up to ten points – in nine of the ten seats polled. The fall in support for Farage’s party has been apparent in earlier Ashcroft polls and in national figures.
A poster on UKPR has observed that:
These are the seats which had been showing lower than normal Con to Lab swings the first time round. So, surprise surprise, there is a low swing second time around.

Not to say that they don't have a decent sized core or that there won't be very effective constituency MPs, but it's not going to be enough. Lord Ashcroft understood that, others didn't.

Re: Wednesday 8th April 2015
I think it's worth bearing in mind a point made by Anatoly (I think it was) and no doubt other poisters recently - apologies for any wron name checking. It's this. The Tories haven't wona general election since 1992. Since the early mid 90s, we've seen the explosive gowth not only of the internet, with its varied news sources, pretty much uncontrolled by the Usual Suspects, but also of social media in general.utopiandreams wrote:I'm not sure whether this was a response to me, AnatolyKasparov, if it were I do agree to some extent. Nevertheless I still think television is the main source of news and sadly most channels are not as even handed as I would like. Of course I have my own leanings so may have a biased view.AnatolyKasparov wrote:I am nowhere near as pessimistic.
Of course *some* people - quite a large number - still uncritically consume what the MSM feeds them, but it is way down on what it used to be.
Not only is newspaper circulation, in particular, massively less than what it was - but surveys repeatedly show people far less ready to believe them as well.
Tories believe they can re-run the 1992 campaign this time round - they can't.
As a result, it's harder now to push a given line - my friends are just as likely to quote Twitter, Huff Post or particular blogs as to direct me to a newspaper or channel, perhaps more so. Deference for the 'old' media has fallen with the rise of these upstarts, as the new sources are frequently factual, analytical and authentic. Simon Wren-Lewis is a good example.
In short, we're no longer content to have shit shovelled our way as a collective. Some people still are massively influenced by the Mail, 6 O'clock News, etc, but many people now see the limitations of the old media - not least the problems associated with oligarchy, plutocracy and self-entitled owners whose vested interests render them the least suitable custodians of any impartial enquiry and reporting.
The world has changed. The world where the Tories and their friends and donors had more or less absolute control over the media is disappearing fast, and as it disappears, the Tories can no longer dictate the agenda - they've tried very hard indeed with Miliband - but along with a multiplicity of new voices and views, has come its corollary: a more sophisticated, educated and cynical population, helped along by a good education system (even now, despite Gove's best efforts).
So deference died a death, and the message is no longer tightly controlled. And the Tories have failed in the intervening 23 years to win an election. As one world ends, another is summoned forth.

I hadn't spotted that. It's a very funny mistake ... I hope it's in the Tory templates not courtesy of the Guardian's poor subbing. And then I hope they send them out to millions of pensioners who look at it and utter some very loud expletives as they realise what they suspected all along is true - the Tories want a country where you get something for nothing (but only for them not the plebs).utopiandreams wrote:I just hope that those using these model responses don't forget to answer the questions that voters pose, rebecca. Obviously that should read "We want a country where you get nothing for something, not something for nothing". After all, many of today's pensioners lost much of their pension pots in one pension scandal or another during the last Tory government.utopiandreams wrote:I just hope that those using these model responses don't forget to answer the questions that voters pose, rebecca. Re: Wednesday 8th April 2015
A point worth stressing. In many areas, the MP may be Tory, but surprise, surprise, it's the local scene that provides the most fluidity and political movement. My own area went from Labour MP/Labour council to Labour MP/Tory council to Tory MP/Tory council (mercifully brief, that one), to Labour council - and pretty solid too - and Tory MP. I expect our idiot PPC to win (he'll be an embarrassment, IMO) so it's a clean sweep. Curiously, we actually stand to lose seats this year, but that's mainly because we've been so successful over the years that there's little left to take, and seats like mine (went in 2012) are generally Tory and therefore a bugger to defend.ohsocynical wrote:Don't forget there will be Council elections in some areas as well as the GE.

If your local PPC has no chance on May 7th, get the hell out there in your ward for the locals if you can. You may even find that the colour of your council actually matters more to your life than the colour of your MP.

Plaid are whinging on Twitter that it is Labour that have dragged up the old article that's put Plaid's candidate here in hot water.
Their candidate complained, in what he himself now calls 'high octane' language, about some English incomers being racist BNP gun toters.
But it was the local paper, a Lib Dem leaning rag, that outed the story, not Labour.
The Telegraph are now front paging it.
Just wondering if any other Welsh residents on FTN have noticed floods of 'nazi' English moving here to avoid ethnic minorities ? Most of the people I've met are like myself and my husband, wanting a peaceful rural life and are to the left of politics.
So if it is as it appears, another Lib Dem dirty trick that's another sign of how desperate they are getting. Ceredigion may be their only seat left in Wales, they are desperate to hold it.
Suspect they may have managed it as the Cambrian News is widely bought and read here and the front page will have an impact.

I was gardening for my favourite Ceredigion client this morning. She likes to talk politics with me and said 'the Plaid candidate looks rather interesting'. I took it at face value this am ... but now I'm wondering if she had seen the Cambrian News front page spread. I'm sure she wouldn't consider herself a Nazi - but she did move here from Dorset. I shall have to check with her next time around. That said - she's moving on May 5th and she will be in Preseli Pembs then. Not early enough to be able to cast a vote for Labour here this time around ... but next time, I'll be on her doorstep with a beaming grin to ask for her support.yahyah wrote:Plaid are whinging on Twitter that it is Labour that have dragged up the old article that's put Plaid's candidate here in hot water.

I can't believe how inept the response to the non-dom annoucement was by the Tories and the media supporters of non-doms.
How about "We've looked at this, and indeed we were the first to suggest a charge. But like Gordon Brown, we think non-doms are a big net benefit for Britain.."
Instead, what do we get? Deceit about Ed Balls.
As for non doms themselves, they'll have tax advisers who'll have alternatives ready to go. It isn't just non-doms who avoid tax. Miliband isn't even favourite to win the election. So Christ, tone down the outrage. Public don't like very rich people moaning about tax at the best of times.
(to be clear, it's a very good announcement. Will bring in extra money and remove v obvious unfairness. Good stuff, then on to the next avoidance scheme).

Pure frontbench mouthpiece with conflicts of interest.
Being one of the co-authors of Brittania Unchained that made me take an instant dislike, a right wingers wet dream.
Hodges apparently is rather nice to Miliband in The Spectator today, too late son, too late..
Well, he might no longer be useful but, for me, he'll always have idiot status. So he won't lose everything. Which is nice.

The South Carolina shooting / murder just makes me unbearably depressed - solidified anger. Has anything actually changed when this can happen ... with, it seems, horrible frequency.

Yes, and the sheer number of shots fired is impossible to take in.rebeccariots2 wrote:The South Carolina shooting / murder just makes me unbearably depressed - solidified anger. Has anything actually changed when this can happen ... with, it seems, horrible frequency.

Just in case anyone is interested, there's a live debate right now (just started) featuring representatives from the main parties about policies on arts and creative industries.

Bradford West hustings appear to be getting unpleasant.

Keepin' it classy George...It looks like the Bradford West hustings are getting quite heated. George Galloway is claiming to have a copy of Labour candidate Naz Shah’s marriage contract and says she lied about her forced marriage.

Election Tonight saying it's unlikely to raise any money but good politics.
Yet again no economists asked, Rachel Sylvester of The Times instead.

Far be it from me to be trivial (and bear in mind that if I had any friends, some of them would almost certainly be southerners) but the little girl we're all so impressed by is a northerner.Prime minister David Cameron meets six-year-old Lucy Howarth on the campaign trail at Sacred Heart primary school in Westhoughton, near Bolton, on Wednesday. Every few days Labour come out with another good promise. I'm wondering what corkers are still waiting to be rolled out.
It's masterly the way they're flat footing the Tories. Whoever's organising it in conjunction with Ed, needs a pat on the back.

I think it was probably that little girl from Bolton. She seemed to be pretty clued up.ohsocynical wrote:Every few days Labour come out with another good promise. I'm wondering what corkers are still waiting to be rolled out.

Cue: wtf icon.http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/po ... 62628.html
It is the closest the Green party will ever get to negative, attack-ad electioneering, but in reality its latest party political broadcast is simply the most cringeworthy political advert in history.

And have just realised. The press and the BBC despite their best efforts, haven't managed to knock Ed off the front pages. I think it's the best publicity he's ever had. The debates were good for him, but non-doms is mega....
