Re: Saturday 2nd, Sunday 3rd & Monday 4th May 2015
Ruth Davison (Conservative Leader in Scotland) calls Jim Murphy a liar and says he's making it up, after he says that people are sanctioned without being told about it and only discover that they have been sanctioned when they go to the cashpoint and discover their benefit has not been paid in... (Leaders Debate, live from Scotland, being broadcast on the BBC News channel now)

I hope that statement is going to bring out a massive number of stories, tweets, statements from people proving that exactly that is happening with sanctions - and forcing Ruth Davison to withdraw her remark.LadyCentauria wrote:Ruth Davison (Conservative Leader in Scotland) calls Jim Murphy a liar and says he's making it up, after he says that people are sanctioned without being told about it and only discover that they have been sanctioned when they go to the cashpoint and discover their benefit has not been paid in... The convenor of the debate asks Ruth Davison, "Do you not think that, in the event of a hung parliament, the Conservative Party could find themselves just as much held to ransom by the DUP or even UKIP as Labour could be with the SNP?" Her answer is, "No, because the difference is that we only need 23 more seats."
I'm glad he asked, he's the only one who has done, but he left the LibDems out...

The Tories are planning to declare victory even if the left win a majority of seats in Parliament. That is a coup d’etat.

They keep peddling that only 23 more seats rubbish ... which has been comprehensively trounced. I heard someone explaining on Radio 4 why it just doesn't wash when Gove first came out with it. They really do think the public are utter fools.LadyCentauria wrote:The convenor of the debate asks Ruth Davison, "Do you not think that, in the event of a hung parliament, the Conservative Party could find themselves just as much held to ransom by the DUP or even UKIP as Labour could be with the SNP?" It relies on them keeping all their current seats ... ain't going to happen. And every seat they lose to Labour actually makes a difference of 2 to the balance they then need to make it up ... and most of their battles are still in Labour / Conservative marginals.

I have no idea if this snippet has any accuracy to it at all - but was told today by someone who was out canvassing with us who has contacts in Cardiff that the Tories appear to have pulled right back from Cardiff North. They were previously piling in the resources there.
We had the most gruellingly long canvassing session in Goodwick today but overall very positive. It always feels constructive when I have some good conversations with people and I did today. Most people seemed genuinely interested in what might happen locally. I have yet to meet someone who has talked about anything Crabb has done for the county or offered any praise for him. Heard a lot of people express the opposite - in that they are definitely not voting for the Conservatives and want a change from Crabb. His constant running down of Wales, especially the Welsh NHS, does not play well here.
First day that I was asked several times if I had any posters they could put up in their windows. I did have and they were.
Absolutely shattered now. But Mr Riots is making mash to go with supper - and that's one of the culinary things he does very well. Brandy and mash ... what more could I ask for?

So Sky's guess - Con 282, Lab 271, SNP 55, LD 17.
Which is Labour government with SNP "support".
I guess that assumes Labour lose a load of seats to the SNP, Tories and Labour gain a chunk from the Lib Dems.
I think that is possible, although I am not hugely confident I worry about sticky Tory marginals.

But won't a lot of Tory marginals be at risk because of UKIP? My understanding was that the Tories failed to get about 30 seats that they were expecting to last time due to their voters deserting to UKIP, and that's when UKIP were on about 4%. Now they're on 12% the Tories could actually start losing seats because of it.TechnicalEphemera wrote:So Sky's guess - Con 282, Lab 271, SNP 55, LD 17.

Depends how well the Tory party is able to squeeze them. They have thrown huge amounts of resources into these seats. Cameron is spamming them with mail and their activists may be paid but they are there.Tish wrote:But won't a lot of Tory marginals be at risk because of UKIP? Labour needs to win 60-70 seats, to offset the SNP losses. It is a big ask, but if the polls are accurate maybe. However if the Tories can halve the swing in the marginals they may squeak home.
