Independent owner considering closing national print titles

http://www.theguardian.com/media/2016/f ... int-titles
The owner of the Independent and Independent on Sunday is considering closing the national print titles and moving to a web-only operation.

Evgeny Lebedev and his top lieutenants have not yet made a final decision, however it is widely expected that they will cease printing the 30-year old newspaper, leading to significant job losses.

The move has been prompted by Lebedev’s decision to sell the i, the cut-price national title which props up the Independent, to Johnston Press in a £25m cash deal.

Assuming the sale goes through, Lebedev is expected to seek to invest the proceeds into further developing the independent.co.uk website into an international digital newsbrand – while ending the newspapers.

Dr Phil Hammond

If @Jeremy_Hunt cared about the NHS he would step down. Imposition is dangerous & unecessary when a new contract could be properly trialled.

Pretty good cultural life too. I am often very pleasantly surprised by how much is on offer around here. We've got 3 cinema screens in Theatre Mwldan - plus a thriving theatre and live events venue - with another community focused arts venue next door to it offering lots of classes and projects. Rhosygilwen up the road offers lots of music, lectures, participative projects and master classes in a beautiful setting.

And I go to possibly the best quality Pilates class I have ever experienced - and I'm saying that as an ex dancer - I know my Pilates.

Good afternoon.
As others have said on here, Jeremy Hunt is trying to demonise the doctors by describing the dispute in terms of Saturday working when the reality is it's about Government funding.
I have seen a comment that sums this Hunt logic up, (logicunt?)
'What Jeremy Hunt thinks is that by dividing 5 pints of water into 7 containers you suddenly have 7 pints of water!'.
In my view the doctors by their very nature don't like being in the spotlight in this way and are fighting on our behalf for the future of the NHS. How can we help them?

From Politics Live, Guardian -
Professor John Schofield, president of the Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association which is the union for senior doctors said it showed a lack of respects[sic] for the entire medical profession.

It will steel consultants and other senior specialist grades... in their dealings with government over the impending new consultant contract.

We fear that senior doctors, who are the government’s next target, will increasingly vote with their feet alongside their juniors rather than wait around to be used as target practice by politicians in whom they have now totally lost faith.
Maybe Jeremy Hunt should have picked on someone his own size . . . .

Hunt is not a cunt. That would imply there is some warmth and depth involved.

He is the lackey of Murdoch, he is the serf of private healthcare, and he is an utter moron with all the charm of a scorpion.

What he has done and said today shows that he is all that plus sufficiently deluded to believe he is actually clever.

Has he no conception of the academic rigour and high intelligence that's required to get through medical school?
He is dealing with people who are among the brightest in the country - just who does he think he is to patronise them?

He is a grubby stain on the body politic. Next time he hides behind a tree I hope it comes crashing down on him.

Just thinking about the EU vote...that latest poll showed 17% undecided.

In a more calm economic environment it would easy to imagine those going for Leave on the basis that it can't do much harm.

But right now with the markets as they are - especially if the vote is in June?

Not so sure. Wouldn't mind betting that people decide to stick with where we are rather than risk it.

It's not quite as bad as Labour Leave, but not far off.
"The real case for entry has never been spelled out, which is that there should be a fully federal Europe in which we become a province. It hasn't been spelled out because people would never accept it. We are at the moment on a federal escalator, moving as we talk, going towards a federal objective we do not wish to reach. In practice, Britain will be governed by a European coalition government that we cannot change, dedicated to a capitalist or market economy theology. This policy is to be sold to us by projecting an unjustified optimism about the Community, and an unjustified pessimism about the United Kingdom, designed to frighten us in."

With Mr Ohso at the hospital for his pre-op today. {He goes in Monday for another look in his bladder}
Appointment for just gone 12. Finally finished all the checks at 2:30. It's only ever taken half that time before.

One elderly lady had been there since 11:30, and got out around five minutes before us.

There was a noticeable lack of nursing and clerical staff - many were said to be ill, and what staff were on duty were straight faced and quiet. We've come to know them quite well, but today it was like being in a different, unknown hospital.

I wouldn't wish ill health on anyone, but will find it very hard to hold my tongue if, in future, a Conservative voter voices disapproval at their treatment, or what's more likely, lack of it.
