SH.I don't know if you are bit thick about this area. The Government, has itself stated intention to review disability benefits and services,it has in effect abolished the purpose of the WCA beyond kerching and needless harm,so it is actually essential on an opposition to seize the opportunity and provide a non misanthropic alternative.

I need no knowledge of any area of policy at all to be able to say that Labour will not be in any position to be making any decisions about this or anything else for a very longtime indeed, if ever.

Literally nothing can help Hugo. He is the John McTernan of these boards, telling us all how great privatisation has been when we've each had tangible real world experience of how it hasn't all been great at all. If someone had told me that the quote about private landlords had been from Hugo, I wouldn't have batted an eyelid because it sounds exactly like him.

came across this by mistake. Nothing to do with me (never come across it before) but it made me nostalgic for those good old days before the Tories got in and none of us could bear the Guardian a moment longer.

We need to rally round (and yes I mean you looking coyly over the cushion) and get on with it.

Whatever "it" is.

I don't watch or listen to media, I prefer to wait and read, if possible.
I've just finished reading Jeremy Corbyn's speech having seen or heard almost nothing about it prior to its being linked here earlier.

Jeremy Corbyn, Leader of the Labour Party, speech at Annual Conference in Liverpool 2016

I'm much more cheerful about Labour's electoral prospects. I appreciated the Labour leader clearly indicating a Labour government
is his goal. Get ready for it, he said. A UK GE may be closer than we think and Labour must be ready for government. The same
Tory government remains in leadership. Over six years of disaster and they're up a tree keeping country and people there too.
What does a citizen do when there's a crisis, when the political party they rely on to provide good leadership is weakened
by division? Turn up to help save it, everyone. If you want a Labour government, we'll all have to work binding Labour
together.

Exclusive: Shami Chakrabarti set to become shadow attorney general

http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk ... ey-general
With the conclusion of Labour conference (here are five lessons from it), Jeremy Corbyn's attention will turn to assembling a new shadow cabinet. The leadership is expected to agree to allow MPs to elect a proportion of the frontbench. But Corbyn intends to begin appointments next week in advance of a deal.

Shami Chakrabarti, who recently became a Labour peer and chaired the party's anti-Semitism inquiry, is set to become shadow attorney general, I can reveal. The barrister and former Liberty director "wants to do more" and the "gig is a no brainer," a source said. Her slated brief has been unfilled since Karl Turner's resignation in June.

Others expected to join the shadow cabinet include Keir Starmer (who could become shadow home secretary following Andy Burnham's departure), former shadow housing minister John Healey and former shadow Wales secretary Nia Griffith. Stephen Pound is said to have turned down the post of shadow leader of the House, currently filled by 81-year-old Paul Flynn, who doubles up as shadow Wales secretary. In his conference speech, he praised Corbyn's "job creation scheme for geriatrics".
Starmer in as shadow Home Secretary?

Excellent news. Adds a lot of gravitas to the front bench and will be streets ahead of Amber Rudd.

Can this fiasco get any worse?

Child abuse inquiry counsel Ben Emmerson QC suspended

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-37500878
The most senior lawyer working for the independent inquiry into child sexual abuse in England and Wales has been suspended from duty.

The inquiry said it had "become very concerned about aspects" of Ben Emmerson QC's leadership of his team.

Mr Emmerson said he was "unable" to comment at this time.

The inquiry said press suggestions Mr Emmerson was considering resigning after raising disagreements over its future direction were untrue.

In a statement, it said: "They are not a matter on which he has advised the chair or panel."

It said he had been suspended so matters "can be properly investigated".

I've argued on here before that we should re-nationalise water, FWIIW.
Nationally owned water supplies were accepted as the best and safest way to do things by all but a few die-hard laissez-faire/"taxes are theft" types from when Joseph Chamberlain convinced Birmingham council to take over the city's water to prevent cholera and other water-borne diseases in the 1880s through to when Joseph and Hayek's Centre For Policy Studies and their protege Thatcher took over the Tories in the 1970s.

Nowadays the successors to Hayek and co. argue that state regulation of water companies for public health reasons is a moral outrage and makes their free market gods cry. I guess they're of the opinion that advocating ultra-right wing economic policies is an effective personal vaccine against King Cholera.
