Struggling to pay your heating bills? Wear slippers, put on a jumper and only use radiators in one room says the Government
New guidance urges poor pensioners to only warm their living room
Other 'top tips' to drive down winter deaths include wearing slippers
Last year's cold weather saw 31,100 excess deaths, mainly among over–75s

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... nment.html
And they've revised the recommended thermostat setting downwards to 18 degrees apparently (it was 21 degrees). That will probably cue another price hike from the energy companies.

I do wonder how stupid the government thinks we all are that they have to tell us to wear slippers ...?

He isn't complaining about Ed Miliband !
For once, he's mostly right in his article, and, as per usual, BTL it's mostly insane, starry eyed UKIPers. Gruesome doesn't even begin to cover it...
It is ok, his latest is a whinge about the mansion tax and how it is going to finish Ed.

Can we tweet him with.

Dan, you called for PM take on Farage, instead he panders to him. Wake up - Cameron is the problem not the solution.
Done.

Everything You Need To Know About The UK’s Most Ridiculous Election
You might not know it, but this week a new hereditary peer will be voted into the House of Lords. Welcome to the UK’s most exclusive, and most utterly bizarre, election.

But,people have been doing all of these things for years, especially pensioners.I only have the heating on for one hour a day in the winter, then use my woodburner in the dining room.I put my daughters' desktop in there as well.
It seems no matter how little central heating I use,the bills keep rising.
I bet all of us here keep a blanket on the sofa for snuggling under in the evenings, and not forgetting the thermals.
When I rented a house in 2011 there was a 'keep the heating on' clause in the lease.Obviously I didn't.

They're mad. Set the thermostat to 64 degrees? My feet go blue at that temperature. That's way too low if you aren't always on the move. And they certainly don't keep it at that temp in care homes. They'd be sued for neglect.

This year we're again trying to heat just one room for most of the day with one bar of an electric fire. We've just pulled the sofa up in front of it and with the coal effect it's dead cosy. Not sure if it'll be so comfortable when the temps drop lower though.
I don't mind sleeping in a cold bedroom so we save money that way at present, but we have to use the boiler for an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening otherwise the rooms and clothes get damp. And if you keep going in and out to the unheated kitchen and bathroom you quickly lose body heat.

I imagine they picture us oldies doing physical jerks to get the circulation going. I wish!

People used to spend a couple of hours tucked up in the library, keeping warm with a good book or the newspapers. Not so many libraries open now of course. And some lunch clubs for elderly people have shut now as well.
Last winter was very mild too,my neighbours' geraniums flowered outside all through December and January.I dread to think what a severe cold spell will bring for many.
I'm very lucky,I saved up and had all my logs delivered in the summer.

Michael Crick/C4 on why the Conservatives may be about to breach the Rochester by-election spending limits by 100% and how it may mean than any election win for the Tories could result in a legal challenge and the result being declared void.

http://blogs.channel4.com/michael-crick ... ester/4541

I have to agree with his assessment. It's hard to see how many claim that spending £100,000 on promoting the Conservative Party just before they've selected an official candidate couldn't be considered by-election electioneering.

They are stunningly incompetent. They are also still going to lose. I think Crick is right (as are UKIP) and those will look like election expenses. In any case UKIP will drag them through the courts.

Toby also seems to be struggling. Nicky Morgan doesn't give him that tingle in the loins like Gove did. And seems she can't be bothered to send him skewed research for him to write up in that serious mode of his.
Morgan's on again tomorrow morning in front of the Edu Select Committee on academies and free schools - final session.

They were none too impressed with her last week so it'll be interesting to see what she comes out with - esp. on the mission creep of the regional commissioners. If you recall Stuart was distinctly unhappy with Gove not letting him know about the existence of them in the first place so I can imagine he'll be wanting to know what's going on..

Golden goodbye for Bryn Parry-Jones
• Chief exec shown the door with diamond-encrusted gold-plated package
• Ruling party’s councillors push through three-pronged deal worth £332k
• Formal disciplinary inquiry into gross misconduct allegations bypassed
• Outgoing CEO’s long-awaited last day will be Halloween

Local politics at its very grubbiest. I think the death knell has well and truly been sounded for Pembrokeshire County Council - a merger definitely beckons. And having been following this filthy, save our own necks at all costs, story ... I now don't care. It might be the only way to get rid of the current bunch of self serving shits in the 'ruling group'. Elected as independents who then join an Independents Plus Group that has got everything and every position of power very nicely stitched up thank you.

This article - although about an outcome that makes me furious - is a very good account of the disgusting shenanigans that have been playing out in Pembs CC over the last year or so.

I'm 30 mins behind on Newsnight but just watched the bit where Davis was talking to a paraplegic from the Times (?) about the guy who was successfully treated after severing of spinal cord & can now walk.

He kept asking her about "your community" & despite accepting I might be being hyper-sensitive, I found myself cringing every time he uttered it & I wanted to scream at him that actually, it's your community too ! Some of us are in wheelchairs but we still live in your community - IDS hasn't managed to completely segregate us yet !

We've had 'special measures' applied to both education and social services for some time ... they could, if things become even more obviously rancid and non functioning, go for direct rule but I doubt it. The Welsh Government clearly want fewer local authorities - mergers into bigger regions - and this will just ensure Pembs don't have a chance of resisting that, if they ever did.

It has really made me question the benefits of having 'independent' candidates in such numbers. They are anything but independent (apart from a few of them). They just hide their real allegiances - and are ever so easily bought. Total tarts.

With you there, @pk1. I shouted exactly which fucking community is that you prat!? the first time and then just seethed, instead. I might be hyper-sensitive – having well-meaning people ask, recently, if you might be better off living in a sheltered-community does not, exactly, endear one to the word! (Answer, no thank you, I like living in the diverse community I already live in.) But I am certain that Melanie Reid's eyes widened and mouth slightly tightened every time he repeated it. And she did, gently, point out that different people with spinal cord damage have different injuries/symptoms and different hopes, wishes, and expectations both for their own lives in general and for what Prof. Wagih al-Masri' and Prof. Geoff Raisman's experimental treatment might mean for the future. If it has a long-term/permanent effect, who it will work for, etc., etc., It is certainly not a 'quick fix.' Yet.

Yes, Melanie Reid is a journalist, has written for The Times for years and started writing her Spinal Column while in hospital after breaking her neck and back in a fall from her horse during cross-country training in early 2010. (Hah! There are at least nine of the communities she belongs to, just in that one sentence! And I'm rambling, so I'll shut up...)
