Seems like a storm in a teacup to me. It would be naïve to think that a piece of equipment of that complexity (the missile or the submarine) could be guaranteed to be 100% fault-free. If it was guaranteed, there would be no need to test them.
I would expect MPs to understand that, and that it wouldn't have a significant effect on any renewal vote.
(Of course, that doesn't mean there are other issues to debate).

It might have been relevant to know what percentage of tests failed but I doubt whether that information will be made public.

The Guardian view on the Trident failure: an alarming cover-up
Editorial

"There is a justifiably growing sense that Mrs May’s preferred style of government is secretive, risk averse and inflexible. "

..and atrocious dress sense.
It's interesting that the article says:
The commander of the submarine involved in the last successful British test launch, in 2012, received a congratulatory message from a Russian spy ship monitoring the launch, according to a book on the UK’s nuclear submarines by Peter Hennessy and James Jinks.
If the failure was so critical, you'd expect the Russians to have made something of it.

From what I understand, 5 tests*, one misfire. 20% failure rate isn't great. The bigger thing isn't the failure itself, it's withholding the information from Parliament.

*UK tests only, US has done 150+ successful ones. However, we are testing firing it from British subs, so it is fairly important.

Apparently the low number of British tests is because of the costs involved. I just don't see why it's a big deal either way - whether Parliament was told or not. To take any significant political decision solely based on such a small sample of tests would be irrational imo.

I wonder if the US has had 100% success, or have just kept quiet about failures - which from a strategic point of view would be understandable.
