I'm assuming you're on a Windows laptop: if you don't mind using Open Source Software, try OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/).

It's imperfect but generally fine for opening simple Office documents, etc.

Edit: also free, obviously, otherwise you may as well pay for Office.
Or may possibly be better with LibreOffice,
(it's a 'fork' of OpenOffice, but has more developers, runs better & should be more compatible with Microsoft, though both are still developed & probably will do the job fine.)

Ah, yes, I had forgotten about the politics of OOo. The LibreOffice crowd clearly understand better that users are not all geeks, if the two websites are anything to go by ;-)

Strictly speaking, none - they're a relic of the days when such meetings actually did decide who the CLP was backing.

(the last time this happened was IIRC 1983, though even then some local parties held all member ballots)

They are still arguably of interest in their own right, though.

Most definitely and not least because it could be seen as positive that so many CLPs are engaged.
That CLPNom Twitter a/c I mentioned does split the nominations into seat categories - safe, defence, target & incontestable. The last tweet with this was 12/08 so the data is out of date hence I'll not link to it but worth keeping an eye out?

Thus the real story, if UK media dare report it, is a +46% increase in CLP wins for Corbyn & 17%-26% increase in votes among Labour members
I had posted this on the Corbyn thread. I don't have a clue whether it gels with other figures.

Has there been MSM coverage of last night's Stoke Central Labour meeting contradicting Phil BC's interesting account of last night's Stoke Central meeting? I've not seen any. Does Stoke Central want an award for not harassing Labour party members who disagree with each other? It's not for nothing you've gone out of your way to report how 'generally speaking' anyone not supporting Jeremy Corbyn isn't getting heckled, told to go join Tories, booed or otherwise had a rough time for supporting Smith. Sorry to hear that, it happens on occasion (and did long before Corbyn)

But it doesn't alter the fact the lurid way the media like to report on Labour often bears little relationship to actual reality.

And that a lot of full members have been denied a chance to meet and select their choice because their local CLPs have been using abusive and unruly behaviour as reported in the media as an excuse to not hold meetings.

Cannot believe Labour have agreed to this too (in 2015 manifesto) we know JC wants to change this as the numbers don't add up, but are we actually opposing this as only two weeks to go as many in Bracknell will become homeless including those on ESA, or will need additional help with food, clothing etc

A general comment on other contributions for a change.

Labour party meetings should be and almost always are conducted in a comradely manner but that cannot be a guarantee that no-one will be upset. Real democracy does not work like that.

What is unacceptable is personal attacks and attempts to intimidate.

You wouldn't think these WW2 bombs would still be active after all this time.
The explosives are mostly pretty stable over time and, counter-intuitive though it may be, the safest way to make an old bomb safe is to blow it up.

Apparently old chemical weapons are the worst to deal with. There's a documentary on BBC iPlayer about Porton Down that covers the incredibly careful way they have to be disposed of. The Belgian chemical weapons disposal unit is still acquiring old World War 1 gas shells, often found by farmers when ploughing, at a faster rate than it can dispose of them.

Simon Danczuk Arrest Imminent

Rochdale’s nominally Labour MP Simon Danczuk has of late faced censure over his “sexting” of a 17-year-old girl, been ordered to pay back thousands of pounds in over-claimed expenses, had an historic claim of rape made against him, faced rumours as to what nearly got him thrown out of a town centre pub one weekend, and then seen himself splashed all over the papers for a brief affair with another young woman.

He just stuck his tongue out as far as I know. Am not bothered about the incident itself in the slightest (though I found it a little embarrassing, given our collective cultural kudos just now). It was the BBC's uneven-handedness about it (versus Corbyn not singing it at some point if I recall correctly), that irked.

I left the last Labour meeting I attended in tears.
Ours was last night and apparently voted Corbyn. Our MP is supporting Smith - I'd emailed to thank her for a very long email outlining exactly why she'd made that choice.
I also had an email just before the meeting to ask me to attend ( the implication was that Smith supporters were reluctant attendees )
I didn't go in the end. I really couldn't face it. I've had enough 'strong' language on local social media without risking the face to face kind. The 'online people' were attending and were pushing the event as 'deciding how we're all going to vote'.
It's not. The nomination meetings are not mandatory and really don't tell us anything other than that the people who show up are more likely to be Corbyn supporters.

I'm voting for Smith. The Labour party members I know socially, I'll include relatives in that, are all confirmed Smith voters.

I don't know how this is going to go. My feeling is that Corbyn will win. If he does, my resignation letter will go in. Not because of Corbyn himself but because of my experience of his more vocal supporters. I've been a Labour voter since Thatcher - I've dug into my pocket for each election campaign ( every week for Ed Milliband ) but I think I've reached the end . I'm shocked at how blummen' rude other Labour members have been and I'm tired of it.

Can you expand, please? Was it some sort of protest? In which case, why did he accept a Sir-dom?
No, he was just over excited. He noticed the camera zoom in on him and pulled a face. The rest of the team were in fits.
It was actually quite funny.

From that and reports from elsewhere I have seen, it seems that when even Smith supporters are a small minority they are treated respectfully by the dissenting majority. Generally no booing, no heckling, no demands to "go and join the Tories".

Just mentioning this because you would never guess that from much of the MSM coverage of Labour currently

Sticks and stones breaking no bones are a thought-possibility, dear Lost Soul,

for , words are just ... words :)

Being myself a formerly six-footer ( now shrunk with age to about 5'9 ! ) but still quite imposing, I'd have no prob meeting a few noisy Trots.

Sociologically and even journalistically speaking, I'd have prefered you to have gone to the meeting, just to really know if your worst fears actually happened !

PS A few idiots being 'blumming rude' does not negate any movement or 'idea shared ' .

We are surrounded by idiots .

They are the electorate FFS !
