St Helena islanders want compensation over unusable new £285m airport

Isolated UK outpost in South Atlantic expected to attract tourists but runway is deemed too windy to land planes on

The airport cost £285m to build and was due to open on 21 May, intended to boost the economy of the British overseas territory. Instead the opening has been delayed indefinitely after it was discovered that the wind shear was so severe that commercial planes cannot land, leaving the isolated South Atlantic island without a clear economic future and the taxpayer facing a multimillion-pound bill.

Although plans for an airport have been circulating in Whitehall for over a decade, DfID was warned of the risk of high winds in a Met Office report commissioned in October 2004 and completed in January 2005. The report, sent to the St Helena government, warned of alarming wind speeds, but the site for the airport had been chosen three years before that report.

In 2011, the then foreign secretary William Hague and the then international development secretary Andrew Mitchell nevertheless pressed ahead with the runway construction claiming it would be value for money, even though it was deemed high risk. After the construction of the airport, tests proved the wind shear was indeed dangerous. (Guardian)
Priti Patel's going to sort it all out, apparently.

High Court calls for change in bereavement law to benefit cohabitees
The whole issue of cohabitee's rights needs looking at. We know a couple who have been together nearly 40 years. Both are now in their 70s and it became clear a couple of years ago that she was showing very clear signs of alzheimers. At around the same time she fell and broke her hip, so was trundled into hospital.

The medical and social work staff at the hospital refused point blank to talk to her partner about her and insisted only a spouse or close blood relative could be told anything about her at all, or asked about her care needs and how she was managing daily life. She has no close relatives and never married.

Eventually things got sorted out when a couple of us who knew her well and also know how social services and medical staff "think" managed to get them to accept that they did need to talk to her life partner, and no, he wasn't someone who'd just turned up recently looking to grab her house and money. All this ridiculous nonsense took a couple of months and didn't help anyone's stress levels or sorting out what the woman actually required or wanted.

Co-habitation is not exactly a new thing, and isn't about to go away. Obviously there do need to be safeguards to prevent abuse, but a spouse or relative can be just as abusive as a non-married partner. If the checks used to identify possible abuse are sufficient when there's a marriage certificate, why aren't they just as sufficient when there isn't a certificate but there is clear evidence of a long-term relationship?

One of the things that I argued for over on that CiF when borrowing figures came out were the Treasury forecasts by month so we could see how far away from the forecast they were.

This was something I had to do on a regular basis - prepare a forecast and then justify the differences when the actuals were known. Not rocket science. But you can see why they don't publish the monthly splits - one less thing that people can beat them over the head with...

Something occurred to me about that new edu campaign group and the mystery of who funds them.

Given that it seems to be driven by Inspiration Trust people, it might be a tad embarrassing if this group were critical of government policy while it was funded by someone who was a non-exec director of a government department...

I seem to recall that Centre Forum were critical of the DfE when one of its trustees (Paul Marshall) was sitting in the DfE as a non-exec director at the time. He resigned shortly afterwards.

Edit - just noticed that Harris Academies are well represented - wouldn't look good if it were known that the DfE was being criticised by something he funded either.

The more I think about this, the more likely is it that the funding comes from usually Tory supporters who are dismayed at May's change of direction on schools but don't want it be known.

Dear oh dear, I've just seen a tweet by one those "highly respected by all" edu people which calls the self-serving guff on this new campaign group's website "great research".

http://www.parentsandteachers.org.uk/research" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This is the one which starts:

Free Schools and Academies are more likely to be rated “Outstanding” than other schools. 26% of Free Schools and 26% of Academies are rated Outstanding by Ofsted, compared to 19% of local authority schools.

This is the standard government line which they like to use because when you add Good and outstanding together...the results are so close that they're not even worth commenting on.

And the author of these 'research' pieces?

Er....no idea.

Great research when the author isn't even named! they're basically "this is what we think" dressed up as phony research.
