London mayor launches unprecedented inquiry into foreign property ownership

Exclusive Sadiq Khan tells the Guardian he will carry out ‘the most thorough research on this matter ever undertaken’ amid widespread concern over spiralling housing costs and gentrification (Guardian)

I'll read it now, shall I? It might be crap for all I know at the moment. But hopefully not.

Theresa May's big thinker - an interview with George Freeman

http://www.newstatesman.com/politics/uk ... ge-freeman

May has endured her heaviest dissent over education, and Freeman was notably lukewarm about the idea of new grammar schools. “As well as her position” on the latter, he emphasised, “the Prime Minister set out a much broader vision”. Asked whether he understood MPs’ objections to academic selection, he said “there will be all the usual consultation and discussions through parliament about specific measures”.
That's not really on-message now is it?
What a strange chap.
The “Brexit roar”, he explained, was “a mixture of very deeply felt concerns and complaints about globalisation, powerlessness and the growing gap between London and [other] places . . .

“There’s an understanding that if we simply delivered Brexit, and didn’t tackle the rest, we would only have dealt with some of the problem.”
Of course, if they'd been tackling the rest, we wouldn't have Brexit. One nation conservatism, my arse.
I thought he handled that whole last week in the most exemplary way: typical of the man. In time, I think he will come to be recognised as a transformational leader who brought the Conservative Party to terms with modern Britain.”

German business leader [Markus Kerber] issues warning over post-Brexit trade with UK

“I have read a lot of articles in the British press saying Germany would be a relatively soft negotiator because 7.5% of German exports go to Britain,” Kerber told BBC Radio 4’s today programme. “Well, 7.5% is a big number – but 92.5% goes somewhere else.” (Guardian)
"Your "Brexit" ministers are innumerate, arrogant idiots," he added.

Historical child abuse inquiry lawyer resigns

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-37508544
The second most senior lawyer in the inquiry into child sexual abuse in England and Wales has resigned.

News of Elizabeth Prochaska's decision to step down came after the lead counsel to the hearings, Ben Emmerson QC, was suspended on Wednesday.

The inquiry said it had become "very concerned" about aspects of Mr Emmerson's leadership of his team.

The BBC understands Ms Prochaska left her position from 15 September for reasons unconnected with recent events.

In a speech in Manchester, he [Liam Fox] said free trade had "transformed the world for the better" and that the UK had "a golden opportunity to forge a new role for ourselves in the world" in the "post-geography trading world" as a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO) - the body which helps sets rules for trade between different countries. Tory MP’s complaint about Russell Howard jibes rejected by BBC Trust

Guess which MP part two.
Can't see what his problem is. All very fair comment as far as I can see. Quite restrained in fact.

His "victories" include talking-out bills to prevent landlords evicting tenants because they asked for repairs, preventing the government aid budget being enshrined in law, a bill to prevent wild animals being used in circuses, blocked legislation to make landlords fit smoke alarms in their properties, blocking stricter regulation of pay-day lenders and more besides.

What does he expect if he keeps talking out widely supported and socially beneficial private member's bills because he's a "libertarian" who thinks on principle that the fewer things government does and the fewer laws it passes the better?

Praise? Adulation? Gratitude?

The Benefits Agency issuing guidance that doesn't exactly agree with the legislation and case law is unfortunately nothing new. Peter Lilley made a regular habit of it in Major's government, to the extent of guidance advising that some decision of the Court of Appeal and House of Lords weren't necessarily to be followed.

The 1997-2010 Labour government was far less culpable of that particular sin. Though their treatment of the ill was to basically continue and extend Major's policy of changing the law with a view to reducing the number of eligible claimants and "toughening up" the assessments. Which was continued after 2010 with great enthusiasm by IDS with the assistance of David Blunkett and Frank Field.

I believe the latter two are still members of the Labour Party....

This from the Mash may make a few here chuckle ;-)
A STEAMY texting session has been ruined by a man’s familiarity with the subjunctive.

Tom Logan was hoping to spice things up with his partner Emma Bradford, only to find his mood deflated by her misuse of apostrophes.

Logan said: “We wanted to keep things interesting, but she’s never heard of subject-verb agreement which is fundamental to successful sexting.

“I can’t be attracted to someone who writes ‘my stockings and bra is coming off the minute you get home’.

“To make it worse, she wrote ’I want you to touch me down their’, and asked me about my ‘pant’s’. Then she sent me some very revealing photos, but all I could see was the comma splice in the caption.”

Logan attempted to ignore Bradford’s split infinitives and random use of semicolons, but eventually found himself becoming so irritated by her inability to distinguish between ‘its’ and ‘it’s’ that he had to call a halt.

He said: “I pretended I had a meeting, but really I just shut myself in the stationery cupboard with a copy of the Economist Style Guide to calm myself down. The misuse of ‘whom’ is a red line for me.”

Bradford said: “I get off on humiliating him by pretending I don’t know the difference between ‘fewer’ and ‘less’.”
