Incidentally, regrading the Autumn Statement...
"Philip, you can't say this - these forecasts are terrible!"
"Well, Prime Minister, these are the ones given to me by the OBR"
"Over-rule them then!"
"I can't. Chote would resign due to political interference and that really wouldn't look good"
"I don't care. We need a bullish position. Who needs experts anyway?"
"Erm..."
Possible?

A UKIP MEP who spent three nights in hospital after a row with a party colleague is quitting the party, saying it is in a "death spiral".
Steven Woolfe, who had been running to be the next leader, told the BBC there was "something rotten" in the party.
He also accused fellow MEP Mike Hookem of inflicting a "blow" to his face in the row at a party meeting.

Accusations of collusion between govt minister and senior civil servant?
Between same senior civil servant and chair of the Public Accounts Committee?
Talk about messy!

Re: Monday 17th October 2016
Evening, everyone. I can't remember if I've greeted the thread or not yet today.
Utterly exhausted from cleaning house today. Not only do I not like housework, I've developed a hypersensitivity to the accumulating dirt/dust in every space. I'm allergic to the dirt and dust. My eyes become red and running, my nose swells, my entire face and neck becomes red for a time. I check every ingredient labelled in list on products and food. I research chemical safety. My spouse suffers from asthma, so it's for us both.
I feel and look much better now. Thank you for reading this and your patience with me.

I posted this link a while ago, but it didn't seem to resonate with anyone, which I think is a shame, as it really brings home the reality of what councils (not Tory ones, obvs) are facing. It's from Newcastle council, and invites you to find the £30M cuts they have to put in place next year.

Theresa May unveils £40 million fund to prevent homelessness in Britain - The Independent

And how, exactly, is local government going to change the national government policies that are that major cause of homelessness? This isn't a problem that local government can prevent because it's a problem that national government - your government, Ms May - deliberately created. How the fuck can local government fix this?Mrs May said: "We know there is no single cause of homelessness [you're right Ms May, there isn't. But we do know there is one major cause] and those at risk can often suffer from complex issues such as domestic abuse, addiction, mental health issues or redundancy.
"So I believe it's time we changed our approach. We can no longer focus on tackling the symptoms and immediate consequences of homelessness. We need to put prevention at the heart of a new approach.
"As a first step towards this change, I'm announcing a new £40 million package to both prevent and tackle the causes of homelessness. This will include £20 million for local authorities to pilot innovative initiatives to tackle the causes of homelessness - helping to find solutions for families and individuals before they reach crisis point."

Theresa May was personally responsible for stalling talks on an EU free trade deal with India, because she was obsessed with controlling immigration, according to former business secretary Vince Cable.
BritmageddonProf Anand Menon, director of thinktank UK in a Changing Europe, said it was naive to think that once Britain has left new trade deals would be easy to strike. He said: “The fact of the matter is, in some circumstances, the EU’s not the stumbling block – we are.”

Re: Monday 17th October 2016
It's a very good way to illustrate the issue. However, forgive the cliche, it's the online equivalent of shipping coal to Newcastle. The people who use it will either already be aware of the problem or they will be Tories and they won't care that cutting the budget for e.g. libraries and museums means they have to close or e.g. cutting Adult services will cause major problems because they're 'grown ups and it's their own fault if they aren't billionaires by now'. So, sadly, the only impact it'll have is a lot of rage that has no outlet and a lot of heartless indifference that'll have the opposite effect.55DegreesNorth wrote:I posted this link a while ago, but it didn't seem to resonate with anyone, which I think is a shame, as it really brings home the reality of what councils (not Tory ones, obvs) are facing. Speech by President Donald Tusk at the European Policy Centre conference

This scenario will in the first instance be painful for Britons. In fact, the words uttered by one of the leading campaigners for Brexit and proponents of the "cake philosophy" was pure illusion: that one can have the EU cake and eat it too. To all who believe in it, I propose a simple experiment. Buy a cake, eat it, and see if it is still there on the plate.
The brutal truth is that Brexit will be a loss for all of us. There will be no cakes on the table. For anyone. There will be only salt and vinegar. If you ask me if there is any alternative to this bad scenario, I would like to tell you that yes, there is. And I think it is useless to speculate about "soft Brexit" because of all the reasons I've mentioned. These would be purely theoretical speculations. In my opinion, the only real alternative to a "hard Brexit" is "no Brexit". Even if today hardly anyone believes in such a possibility. We will conduct the negotiations in good faith, defend the interests of the EU 27, minimise the costs and seek the best possible deal for all. But as I have said before, I am afraid that no such outcome exists that will benefit either side. Of course it is and can only be for the UK to assess the outcome of the negotiations and determine if Brexit is really in their interest. Paraphrasing Hannah Arendt's words: "a full understanding of all the consequences of the political process is the only way to reverse the irreversible flow of history". Thank you.

I'm not checking out the Mirror to find out if it's satire or a joke. I know anything mad thing is possible.HindleA wrote:'Boris Johnson' registered as candidate in the US elections on platform of reuniting British Empire

someone submitted an application to be listed as an official candidate in the election under the name "JOHNSON, BORIS DE PFEFFEL RT. HON. MP" to the American Federal Elections Commission (FEC).

I'm reading some of the comments below the line Elsewhere regarding UK/EU citizens resident here, other EU countries and
uncertainty. This Tory government will fix it so their City financiers and elite assorted get exactly what they want, they'll be
free to go where they like and regular people won't. It scares the hell out of me. Tory government play fast and loose with
citizenship, responsibilities and privilege.

Sorry for slight obsession but from initial mooting it was bollox, not least for the "inconsitency" of where the number came from.
"that the government was taking a set of families who were undeniably poor and disadvantaged, and redefining them – without a shred of evidence – as dysfunctional and antisocial."

Exactly HindleA, in fact have difficulty recalling any policy or legislation that didn't have the same problem. Being utter bollox, I mean. Would be interested to hear of anything that people thought might have had some merit. Or maybe everyone felt the same?
But parliament was steamrollered successfully as the merry old dance went on accompanied by the media singers. (Reminds me of the completely dreamed up and inauthentic raggy morris dancers and their made up folk songs who used to get the sunday pub visitors going not far from here. Oh how they were clapped and cheered.) Wonder how many of the taken in will ever admit to having been wrong, there was enough of them to win (?) an election.
