Theresa May's offer to EU nationals does not go far enough, says EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier

Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, has criticised Theresa May’s offer to EU nationals. He says it does not go far enough in a tweet he posted a few minutes ago.

Michel Barnier (@MichelBarnier)

EU goal on #citizensrights: same level of protection as in EU law. More ambition, clarity and guarantees needed than in today's UK position.

British expats in France are also underwhelmed. ‘We find it bizarre that she expects the EU to reciprocate to her offer which falls short of their own. Does she expect the EU to water down its offer to match hers?’ said Dave Spokes, a spokesman for Expat Citizen Rights in EU.

‘This not a negotiation to get the lowest possible price. It is, or should be, a negotiation to gain the best support for real people. It seems a very odd strategy for the UK to offer less support for citizens than that being offered by the EU. Should they not be encouraging the EU to give more?’ he added.
The whole thing is such a monumental waste of time it's criminal.
As if there isn't anything actually useful we could get on with.

MPs could have their summer holiday extended to three months under reported Conservative plans to stifle rebellion against Theresa May.

Parliament would rise sooner than the planned date of 20 July, while the September sitting would be scrapped, resulting in a summer break of as long as 12 weeks, according to the proposals.

Maybe the Tory mps could have an extended break, to calm their nerves, whilst the other parties hold the fort. Or just let the new intake of MPs have the house to themselves for a few weeks & get some hands on experience as a confidence building exercise.

Political leaders from every home nation attacked it, with one branding it a “stitch-up”, another calling it a “shoddy little deal” and others warning it threatened peace in Northern Ireland.

But Ms May insisted it served “the whole United Kingdom”, while her ministers pointed out the full amount of money would only be delivered if Sinn Fein returned to power-sharing in Northern Ireland, breaking a three-month deadlock at Stormont.

Indeed. Serves the whole of the UK to undermine the WOTP by using public money to buy a majority that the actual WOTP has just denied them.

Speaking on anti-EU bias in the British press, Ms Day said that the media’s view that the UK was considered to have “caved in” by accepting the EU’s sequencing was “not a good sign of things to come.”
“If you have a simplistic mentality that every negotiating session Britain has to win otherwise it’s losing, it is going to make the mood music and the actual handling of the negotiations much more difficult,” she said.

The most straightforward answer is what it has long been - stop buying them. And slowly but equally surely, that happening does appear to be the case.

The EEF, the UK’s organisation representing British manufacturing have found that a third of manufacturers surveyed said that their business needs cannot be found among UK nationals, while others say they recruit EU nationals because they have a better work ethic, have foreign language skills, or because they are part of an intra-company transfer programme. The "better work ethic" is a bit too Brittania Unchained for my liking, but the rest - yes.
