Most reaction to that I've seen is of the *rolls eyes* kind.

There's a confusion in there between safeguarding (ensuring that the adults who work in the school have been fully checked out before appointment or before they get to work with pupils), and sexual harassment between pupils.

Ofsted check for the former by looking at the Single Central Record* and talk to the link governor** for safeguarding but don't to my knowledge check the latter.***

* By coincidence our link governor for safeguarding reported only the other night that she'd checked it for those teachers who had started in September and found all was well. That link governor post is one of only two statutory ones we have - that and for SEN (which I do).

** Incidentally, we all have to be CRB checked too.

*** Well, I guess they might if they had complaints from parents that nothing had been done about any incidents.

Six local council byelections yesterday, and something of a trend visible this week:

Arun DC - LibDem gain from Tory with over half the vote and a swing of over 20%. This is a traditionally safe Tory area and the present ward safely returned 2 councillors for them in the 2015 (post boundary change) elections, though UKIP took a reasonable second place - they did not even stand this time and the LibDems took advantage to storm from 3rd and last then to first now. Tories themselves down from nearly half the vote two years ago to barely a third now - Labour stood this time round but were unable to match other recent good results on the south coast, having to content themselves with a modest 8%. That was still double what the Greens, another new entrant, got though.

South Bucks DC/Buckinghamshire CC - this "dual vacancy" by contrast saw safe Tory holds in both contests; the DC ward saw a Tory win over UKIP in a straight fight by 85-15 in 2015 (again, the first post boundary change election) this time round UKIP vacated the field and the LibDems stepped in but the Tories still won by around 3 to 1. The CC division had again saw UKIP finish second in 2013, beating the LibDems this time but they fell to last place earlier this year and now also left this one as a straight Tory/LibDem fight - they secured this one with over 80%. A bit disappointing to see Labour absent in both of these (they had fought the CC seat this May)

Copeland DC - Labour hold, though by just 5 per cent over the Tories in yet another straight fight. The recent electoral history of this area doesn't really need retelling, of course - this ward has returned 3 Labour councillors at every election since 2003, but the Tories were competitive in 2007 and their sole candidate also wasn't far behind the last Labour runner in the most recent 2015 contest. That contest also saw a significant vote for Independent candidates, and in their absence this time the Tories benefited more (though both parties were well up on two years ago) Labour will be pleased at any hold in the circumstances, though.

Sefton - LibDem gain from Tory, augmenting their recent success in this historically mainly Tory ward after they won it last year (apart from 2012, the Tories have won every other election here since taking all 3 seats in the 2004 all-out elections) This was a gain due to the incumbent Tory councillor having been elected in 2015, the LibDems fielded a high profile candidate - the former MP for Southport - and were rewarded with a ten point increase on even last year to well over half the vote beating the Tories by over 2 to 1 (and a swing of fully 19% since two years ago) Labour third with little change whilst UKIP - in their only showing this week - fell from 10% a year ago to just 2% now. Greens just behind in last, also down.

North Devon DC - the third LibDem gain from Tory this week, though the Greens weren't far off pooping their party in this one. This ward was LibDem in the 1990s but in recent years has had a more varied history, splitting 1Ind/1Con in 2003 and 1Con/1LD in 2011, whilst in 2007 and 2015 the Tories took both seats but the LibDems were a handful of votes short from getting one on each occasion. They in fact only increased modestly on their score two years ago, whilst the Greens built on their respectable 3rd place then with a double figure increase to over 30% of the vote. Tories crashed into third with their vote roughly halved, not that far ahead of Labour who managed a healthy increase to 13%.

Out of idle curiosity - and with no grounds to back up any conspiracy ideas - has anyone checked if MP's now being outed are on the remain or brexit side ? or are they balanced ?

Hopkins is one of Labour's few hardline anti-EU MPs who voted with the Tories on the recent "Henry VIII powers" bill. For whatever that is worth.

Probably tend to lean towards the 'shake it all about' tendency.

It has emerged that the Labour activist who has accused Hopkins recently worked for......Michael Dugher. That is only going to encourage suspicions I'm afraid.

The prolonged and painfully weak recovery is regularly blamed on something defined as “productivity”. Suspicions of what, exactly? She says she made a complaint a couple of years ago and Hopkins was reprimanded. This is either true or it isn't and is easily checkable, surely. The complaint may have been minor in nature or it may not, but how would her working for Dugher recently have influenced her to feel strongly enough to have made a complaint back then?

The reaction to Kate Maltby and Ava Etemadzadeh is interesting in that it is similar from either side of the political divide. And neatly illustrates why all those women who had uncomfortable encounters with Harvey Weinstein but in which nothing really happened in the end didn't take it anywhere. Because in a situation of one person's word against another, the person in the position of power is almost always given the benefit of the doubt and the motives of the accuser are almost always questioned.

At least the Labour party is investigating their accusation, that's the important point as far as I'm concerned. What are the Tories doing about Damien Green?
