Michael Gove is currently on Sky News point blank refusing to answer a question about whether it's true the UK sent large quantities of PPE equipment to China in February.

If this is an interview for PM, he's flunking it. Hopelessly uncharismatic and constantly blinking like a startled frog.

God knows - but, whatever it means, it's unlikely to be a good idea. It sounds like a Cummingsism.

Call from the oncology specialist the other day and 'er indoors is now on a course of tablets with surgery planned for July (they'd do it now but there's something going on right now that makes it not such a great idea). Tumour marker was going up again so they did a scan and worked out what bit they could easily remove. Fortunately she's in far better shape than last time so not too worried about it.

She's not allowed to work though even though she dearly wants to so is getting a little bored.

Happy anniversary RoT. Glad things are sounding hopeful.

Tim Walker gave his interpretation in the tweet I linked to on the previous page:
‘Run this hot’ means lifting lockdown while #COVID19 still deadly.

The health secretary, Matt Hancock, has appointed a “personal protective equipment (PPE) tsar” to take on the shortage of supplies across NHS trusts in the UK.

Paul Deighton, 64, the chief executive of the London 2012 Olympics, has been appointed to get a grip on the situation, as thousands of doctors and nurses across the country are being forced to work without the correct PPE.
If this is necessary/the right thing to do, shouldn't it have happened 6 weeks ago?

Where is Simon Stevens in this PPE fiasco?

But there is a more basic point

The "lesson" that is "learned" from many inquiries is that there should have been more open and better decision-making *at the time*

We are still now *at the time* for key decisions to be made

Less than 600 UK deaths announced today, even with the "weekend effect" that has to be modestly encouraging. The main danger now may be lifting lockdown too quickly?

It would be madness lifting the lockdown any time soon.

Evening folks, sorry about going mostly AWOL yesterday but I admit I was in a bit of a state. I even managed to send my contact details to the wrong address, so instead of the funeral directors some random stranger received an unexpected morbid email. Thankfully they replied so I was able to rectify the error. What a dumbass. I'll probably find my bank account empty tomorrow and the police at the door wondering why I was siphoning money to Estonian gangsters.

AK&Citizen -- I wouldn't trust the UK figures for a second , they were coming in up to a week late from some places . Plus the fact some people are sent home from hospital, basically to die , and others die suddenly at home on the 'Eighth Day collapse' including NHS staff back from work . Plus the counting of deaths at home and in care homes are very 'variably' recorded (they were hugely under-reported) !

The logic is that as many die on the downward slope as the upward , check the graph, so any resurgence swiftly puts the hospitals back in emergency mode . Angela Merkel explained all that to the Germans, subtitled for us . Lifting lockdown is only responsibly possible if you have a hell of a lot of data , do it progressively, and can monitor it like a hawk . Areas where the UK is well behind .

There does appear to be a popular British (and Trumpian) idea that you can simply lift lockdown and go back in history to Pre-Covid times , but it does look very unlikely to me . It will be a long haul .

I heard this afternoon that a distant relation in the US has just been intubated , so he's off to sedated dreamland

The fact is now is not the time to rock the boat. We need to get behind Chamberlain, all of us, whatever our views. Anything else will have to wait until we're not facing such a crisis.

ETA - I think I quoted this from an article the other day but it's a good quote that's relevant here so I'll say it again - the best time to plant an Oak tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now.

Last time I saw Adrian Hindle we were in the car with his mum and dad on the way to dropping me off at Chesterfield station. And we argued like children in the back seat all the way about the crisps he'd helped himself to the night before.

I remember quite clearly these had been Walkers Sensations balsamic and caramelised onion crisps that I'd got half price in the local Co-op. I even had the receipt.

But once again with his cavalier notions of ownership of foodstuffs the silly bugger argued they'd been his.

Just to wind me up.

Because that amused him.

I'm not sure how many of you realise just how annoying he could be.

It was nice to see Ephemerid and other blasts from the past paying their respects.

I don't know about the politics but I appreciated seeing someone who once tried to help me and I treated badly in return.

She's an absolute star.
