Re: Tuesday 2nd December 2014
From a poster on another board re Gove's A level reforms. Someone's got a nice mess heading their way.
What is becoming increasingly clear is that University entrance in 2017 is likely to be chaotic, with some students on new A levels some on legacy syllabuses and some with stand alone AS and some with integral AS. And of course individual students may have a combination of all of these. Cambridge University and I think the Russell group are advising that students should take the new AS as well as the new A level, in order to strengthen applications which will typically result in a 50% increase in the number of exam papers pupils are taking.
One possible outcome of all of this is that more Universities will be tempted to set their own entrance exams in order to save them the problem of resolving the horrendous complexity they could be faced with when selecting potential students. If this were to the case it would be likely to further play into the hands of the public school educated pupils and would be a serious blow to the credibility of A level exams. Is this what the great man intended - I doubt it.

A propos of nothing, the man who wrote this in 2003 is still doing extremely well for himself.
Love the way he says "the left" opposing Churchill, but not "the right" (who he calls the establishment).
Andrew Roberts. This is not another Suez crisis, for the obvious and straightforward reasons that the west is not today trying to recapture anything for itself, that Egypt posed no military threat to the Nato allies in 1956 and that the British government is pursuing its ends openly through the UN, at least initially, rather than through collusion. Moreover, the people of Egypt were fully in support of Nasser, whereas the moment a US-led invasion of Iraq is successful, the full extent of the Iraqi people's fear and hatred of Saddam will immediately become evident.
No, the situation is far closer to the late 1930s, when a fascist dictator stealthily acquired weapons of mass destruction - the Luftwaffe's bombing arm - and attempted to acquire nuclear weapons, too. That totalitarian dictator later invaded his neighbour (as Saddam did), gassed his political and racial enemies (as Saddam has) and brutalised and tortured his own people (as Saddam does.) The League of Nations, on the morning after Poland was invaded, had on its urgent agenda the standardisation of European railway gauges. Today's United Nations is fast shaping up to be equally ineffectual.
In the face of a danger that the left, the Church of England, much of the establishment, the press and the French denied really existed, a lone voice told the truth unashamedly again and again until events forced the rest of the nation to listen. This brave politician faced public obloquy and collapsing political popularity, until he was proved right, when he became the most popular prime minister in recent memory. For Churchill, this apotheosis came in 1940; for Tony Blair, it will come when Iraq is successfully invaded and hundreds of weapons of mass destruction are unearthed from where they have been hidden by Saddam's henchmen.
Rarely in history are we allowed quite so exact a template as we have been given militarily by what happened in the Gulf in 1990-91, and politically by what happened in Europe in the 1930s. But this time, were the west not to act and Saddam eventually to build nuclear bombs, he would have more destructive capacity even than did Hitler.
Love the way he says "the left" opposing Churchill, but not "the right" (who he calls the establishment).

Had to go to the dentist again today. Suddenly looked around and noticed how appallingly short of decent shops we are in that part of the town centre. Opposite them is a Money Shop, a Bookies, a takeaway and another bookies. To the side a small betting shop with gaming machines and in the small square, one large empty Mothercare store, two empty shops and two temporary Christmas shops. And they haven't even bothered to put a Christmas tree up.

I've written this before not long ago here that I'm baffled by why "Black Friday" (originally meant retailers finally made their profit within a few days late in the year - putting red-inked accounts into the black) has been so unceremoniously dumped into the UK - it's a bad name & it's frightening to be encouraged to spend money on command.

Mad Mel must be furious...British, American and other allied forces are now fighting directly alongside their former rivals Iran, according to new footage of the war in Iraq.
An Iranian jet has been filmed for the first time bombing positions of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil), during a battle for the town of Saadiya, north-east of Baghdad.
United State Air Force jets have been flying missions over Iraq since August, and the RAF since September.
Iranian advisers are known to have been embedded with the Iraqi army and militia forces fighting Isil. But this is the first proof that the Islamic Republic and the countries it famously termed the “Great and Little Satan” - America and Britain - are taking part in missions on the same side.

Was a poll actually taken, you Tory horse stables heater on the taxpayer's dime? That doesn't seem to be the case, does it? It was a meeting. Will nothing end the grotesque projection from people choosing to align themselves with sloppy Lords making a mess of their own data & the conclusions they've been forced to retract due to those egregious mistakes?Nadhim Zahawi, the Conservative MP who co-founded the YouGov polling company, said an advertisement for a public meeting involving David Hanson, the shadow immigration minister, had “the smell of push polling”.
Zahawi spoke after Labour published an advertisement for a meeting in Crewe on Wednesday with Hanson and Dr Adrian Heald, the party’s local prospective parliamentary candidate, which features four pointed questions about immigration.
The questions were:
• Does immigration benefit or cost the economy?
• Is there an increase in pressure on public services?
• To what extent does immigration change our communities and what do local people think about these changes?
• How does a community like Crewe & Nantwich embrace cultural diversity?
The advertisement concludes with the words: “Labour has set out a new approach to control immigration and control the impacts from immigration from local communities. Britain needs immigration rules that are tough and fair.”
Zahawi said the questions amounted to push polling – the tactic in which a political party uses an apparently innocuous poll to promote its message.

Throughout the early years of this Coalition government the official position was that Iran should be considered a rogue state with whom negotiation was impossible; in January 2012 William Hague was even going so far as to suggest that military action against Iran, to stop their nuclear programme, could not be ruled out.
So what happened in the (nearly) three years since then to change them from Public Bogeyman Number One to an ally & a country with whom we could work? Step up to the plate Edward Samuel Miliband who changed the game when he prevented Cameron from having his nice little war, which persuaded Obama to change direction; the moment the war option was removed from the table then we, in the form of our Government, had no choice but to start talking to Iran, due to their involvement (by proxy) in the Syrian civil war - and so, here we are, with significant progress being made in talks over Iran's nuclear programmes and with them working with us as an ally, rather than against us as an enemy.
And all because one party leader, ridiculed as being weak, had the principles to stand up to the critics in his own party (including Blair), the the UK Government and to President Obama and say, on behalf of the British people, "No, not this time. This time we need to think & to talk" - to pick up on the Twitter campaign, #CameronMustGo because that is the sort of man we need leading this country, not a man who blows with the prevailing breeze and spends all his time (and our money) appeasing his donors and cronies.

Actually Miliband should give them both barrels. Point out Osborne has no credibility on reducing the deficit. Point out that the UK has a welfare state forged in the crucible of World War 2 and Labour will not sacrifice that for the sake of childish ideology. Labour has a more credible plan than the Tories and it should stick to it. If it means the deficit gets eliminated later so we can remain a decent country tough titty.RogerOThornhill wrote:Miliband should tell his MPs to go home and let the result of 300-odd to zero be given to an empty Commons.rebeccariots2 wrote:They would like to think they are ... but this trap has been flagged up for quite a while now. What a waste of time and resources - our 'taxypayers' paid for time and resources. Seems to something that Tories know how to do best - wasting things.yahyah wrote:

I really can't understand why increased Green membership is particularly bad for Labour.
My hunch is there will be more former LibDems there than former (recent) Labour. Despite being a Labour member myself, I'm pleased to see another party of the "left" doing well. Good luck to them. Well mostly

You & I are in agreement, Paul. I'm a friend of the Green party & I belong to the Labour party. I look forward to the policies of both uniting to make both stronger. I mean that. It can happen.PaulfromYorkshire wrote:I really can't understand why increased Green membership is particularly bad for Labour.

Jeez. I wander across to The Guardian & come across this pile of shite:

Osborne is a more nuanced figure. Unlike the prime minister, he is intellectually engaged in the question of how the liberal impulses behind the original modernisation mission can be merged with the challenge of reaching voters left behind by globalisation.
Proud to be part of The Indecent Minority.

Has there been any speculation in the media on Osborne's 'state'?diGriz wrote:danesclose wrote:Osborne is a more nuanced figure. He's not sodding "nuanced". He reckons he can get away with counting a rebate he was due anyway as a reduction in a surcharge he said he wasn't going to pay, but did.
He reckons he can con us with new money for the NHS, when it isn't new.
Etc. etc. he's a transparent charlatan like Dave, Nick and the rest.
Oh and didn't he recommend Coulson for the job with Dave?

I don't normally retweet partisan Tweets on FTN's behalf, but I hope everyone will forgive me for retweeting Wirral West Labour's campaign to unseat Esther McVey
