If Miliband resigns Salmond will be the leading figure from the opposition side...is that what we really want?

The worst thing Labour could do is for Ed to resign - we'll just get a period of infighting that won't do any good.

Whatever future shape Labour takes it will be different.

It may be that Ed himself will feel he has to go. Centre left politics has taken a hammering tonight. The problem is you can't really tack right and there are no obvious successors ( unlike John Smith last time). I have no idea what happens next.

Miliband needs to stay or there is no-one to provide adequate opposition. That is what is "grown-up".

No-one could have done better than Miliband given the shit the tory press and SNP have been giving him. To think anything else is just fantasy.

This is worse than 92. Worse that I believed things had changed, that people were more sceptical of the media.

For all the polls, utter crap, the twitter campaigns, endless retweets of how well things were going on in constituencies, I wasn't optimistic but I didn't think it would be this bad.

Right.

I'm off to bed. Too depressed to stay up - I'll only start to think about the implications of this and that will make it worse.

Edit - and AS being over-run by the most vile crowing Tories. Had enough.

Yep I am calling it, but looking at this I fear Cameron will get a majority. If only he hadn't promised that euro referendum.....

Can anyone kindly give me a sense of how bad it is for the Lib Dems, and if, as RR suggests Plaid not doing that well.

Alex Salmond is going to form a progressive alliance in the commons. presumably that means he is going to work closely with cameron to separate scotland from the rest of the UK.

On my way out the door, this is dire for the Lib Dems. Hughes may be gone, Clegg looks wobbly and even if he survives he will have to resign. I think the Tories have destroyed them in the South West and they have evaporated in the North.

This is an existential crisis for them as well.

Plaid have 2 at the moment, vote share slightly up on 2010 so far (0.1%).

BBC are quite comprehensive here, not sure how quickly they are updating:

Labours first gain then. ( really really going now honest).

Problem is they need a load more to stop Cameron romping home because the swing is going the other way in the Midlands.
