Creating the single market was a painful process. Getting 28 countries to agree on everything from safety standards of hairdryers to banks’ capital levels was tough. A lot of politicians had to return home to their voters and admit that things would have to change.
Allowing one country today to dictate its own conditions while being part of this market would probably lead to the unravelling of the whole package of hard-won compromises. And that is not going to happen.

A sinister turn at the DfE

"It seems that the same governing party which felt it so important to defend the merits of a free press after the hacking scandals, has decided that such freedom to scrutinise things shouldn’t apply to those questioning the DfE. They have created new rules that insist that when organisations use DfE data, their findings must be sent to the department 48 hours before being published."

It was rumoured a couple of days ago that the Labour whips would resign.
Ah well. You can't just a patch a small plaster over a gaping wound.

Well, I would have thought a few whips can be replaced easily enough - isn't the idea of having a new CW to have some new personnel underneath well?

And of course, Nick Brown is hardly a confirmed Corbynista so I'm not sure what all the hysteria is about......

FWIW parents had option to sent their children to private/segregated schools, all paid for-wouldn't have crossed their minds to even contemplate it,so it is somewhat ironic they are denigrated/besmirched as being "Daily Mail" readers, what they aren't are arch hypocrites, ploughing the "it must change" route but in the meantime taking full advantage of what they supposedly bemoan.

Well, we shall see about that.

I think a lot of MPs in the "middle" of the PLP spectrum are tired of this endless whining and bitching.

Their instinct is now to give JC a couple of years relative free rein and see how it goes.

Mr citizen is reading King Lear to me
KING LEAR
The bow is bent and drawn, make from the shaft.

KENT
Let it fall rather, though the fork invade
The region of my heart: be Kent unmannerly,
When Lear is mad. What wilt thou do, old man?
Think'st thou that duty shall have dread to speak,
When power to flattery bows? To plainness honour's bound,
When majesty stoops to folly. Reverse thy doom;
And, in thy best consideration, cheque
This hideous rashness
: answer my life my judgment,
Thy youngest daughter does not love thee least;
Nor are those empty-hearted whose low sound
Reverbs no hollowness.

KING LEAR
Kent, on thy life, no more.

KENT
My life I never held but as a pawn
To wage against thy enemies; nor fear to lose it,
Thy safety being the motive.

KING LEAR
Out of my sight!

KENT
See better, Lear; and let me still remain
The true blank of thine eye.

KING LEAR
Now, by Apollo,--

KENT
Now, by Apollo, king,
Thou swear'st thy gods in vain.

KING LEAR
O, vassal! miscreant!

Laying his hand on his sword

Ros "Baroness" Altmann...
"...last May, [as] pensions minister, notes a failure by government to deal with demographic change.
I’m afraid this really is a looming crisis which has been left far too long already,” she writes in a
memo to No 10 and Oliver Letwin, then a cabinet minister. “This really is an issue that has the
potential to cause significant social and economic distress. There has been no real planning
for these demographic realities. No money has been set aside in the public or private
sector to fund social care if or when the needs arise
”"
Altmann's career is in pension portfolio management, isn't it?
