It does not seem surprising, therefore, that the British media has chosen to ignore the shipwrecks of last night. 240 people drowned far away from our shores, far away from where we can see them. Those in Calais pose a greater threat to us. They have the potential to cross our borders and seek safety within our land. Those who died last night represent the failure of Europe to protect people in the most desperate situations, in countries ripped apart by militant authorities and chemical weapons.

Does anyone know why they still use top loading washing machines in the States ?
I always wonder when you see them in films and tv shows. Or why we use front loaders and not top loaders ?
Seems odd when so many electrical goods are standard across the world now.

Why are American washing machines usually top-loaded while European are almost exclusively front-loaded

Partially because of where people usually have them ie.in separate room/under work surface in kitchen.

Top loading washing machines use up resources faster. Water, gas, electricity blow right through them all must use up everything faster

I don't really know but I'd guess it's more a case of why Europeans switched to front loaders and I think it's because they are smaller, to fit into our smaller houses, and more energy and water efficient to comply with our stricter environmental regulations. I might be wrong, but I think top loaders are more basic machines, cheaper to build, but more expensive to run, doing the job more quickly but without as much sophistication.

It's actually quite fascinating. Front loaders made some inroads into the US market in the early 2000's but top loaders are currently fighting back with more efficient machines. The price difference is surprisingly substantial, about $200, so when space isn't a problem and energy costs are cheaper than in Europe, the continuing popularity of top loaders makes a lot of sense:

I thought top-loaders were less hard-wearing on the bearings (poetry thrown in) - thus longer-lasting. Also, you can add washing as you go along. Although I think you can do that now with some front-loaders. Don't know about the energy consumption comparisons.

I used to have a top-loader (years ago) and I was very impressed. It got things very clean (also, I think, on account of the orientation of the drum - ie not sideways on).

Edited for just about everything

My first washing machine was a top loader...with an automatic mangle. (Gosh wasn't I posh).

First in were the tea towels, followed by other towels, then the bedsheets. Nappies were always washed on a separate "boil" cycle., as were vests and pants.

Surely "handwash" or "quickwash" are the most used cycles on washing machines these days?

Only towels, flannels or tea towels require a higher water temperature.

Nappies go to land fill, don't they?

Towels only in this household, everything else is either quick wash or 30°C. Two young boys mean that the washing machine takes a bit of a pounding. :)

I've developed skin and respiratory sensitivities within the last couple of years. I'll use a higher water temperature setting and gentle detergent for towels and clothing. The dust and dirt accumulation a couple of adults manage to get into in my household is astonishing.

Ouch.

Liz Truss is unfit for office and should resign

https://thesecretbarrister.com/2016/11/ ... ld-resign/
And so what of our Lord Chancellor? How long did it take her to step out of the shadows and call for calm? To remind us all – populace, media, Parliament and executive – that due process to challenge the judges’ decision is taking place, and that the vicious, misinformed and unwarranted rage on display represents a dangerous and unjustified threat to the foundations of our democracy?

How long did it take her, after the Prime Minister pusillanimously refused to acknowledge that there was a problem, to stand up to the PM and release a statement defending the right of judges to carry out their vital constitutional function without being gratuitously abused and threatened?

Nothing by lunchtime. The calls came louder. Shadow Lord Chancellor Richard Burgon released a statement condemning the behaviour and urging the Lord Chancellor to join him. The Lib Dems did likewise.

And as the clamour grew, as the legal profession watched on expectantly, waiting for the self-styled guardian of the judiciary to step into public view and remind her Parliamentary colleagues, fellow ministers and the media of the centrality of judicial independence to our constitution, and of the inherent danger in misrepresenting and hounding judges in these terms, there was the deafening sound of silence.

The Lord Chancellor said nothing. Not a single word.

First time I saw this was in the 80s and I switched on some way through and wondered what on earth was going on. Took a few years before I saw it again (probably at the NFT) and then it all made sense.

One of my favourites...and look at the run of P&P films.

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
A Canterbury Tale
I Know Where I'm Going!
A Matter of Life and Death
Black Narcissus
The Red Shoes
The Small Back Room
Gone to Earth

About as good a run as any director has ever done.

Blimp, Red Shoes and this in my top 10 without question.

I;m not going to bother linking it because it's just nonsense but the Telegraph as a story about the possibility of a general election.

Except that there's not one mention of the Fixed Term Parliament Act.

How is that possible? It's a pretty important consideration!
