Back in 1983 this very evening I was sitting in a cinema with the girl who I'd asked out that afternoon.

And 33 years later...she's at work.

Every year we get to 5th November and struggle to recall how many years ago that was...

Amused me quite significantly. Reminds me of a sibling once: " 'kin 'ell. look at that sky. "
I'll say no more.

Sadly I was thinking of the shapes of the graphs. Eastern European deaths have gone up - is it over time and thus wars; or now and just that younger people are leaving.

I see Rentoul has entered the fray over the 'enemies of the people' affair...
Brexit hysteria

Just back from New York, so I haven't written my usual "Sunday" column (which appears online on Saturday and in the Sunday Digital Edition of The Independent). I was at a conference on referendums at NYU, where Ed Miliband and others spoke, and it was interesting – I will write about it shortly.

But first I have returned to a huge fuss about yesterday's Daily Mail front page having a go at the judges in the Article 50 case as the "enemies of the people".

It is absurd tabloid hyperbole, but some of the scandalised headclutching about it is even more ridiculous. An attack on an independent judiciary, indeed. It is the vigorous expression of opinion.

If the Daily Mail simply said it didn't agree with the judges' ruling and that the case had been brought by people who patently want to obstruct the decision of the people in the referendum, I would agree with both points.

And, yes, it was obviously quite wrong for the online edition of the Mail to refer to one of the judges as "openly gay" – as it acknowledged by deleting the reference within hours.

But the print edition is entitled to express its opinion in colourful language. The hounding of Liz Truss, the Justice Secretary, for failing to rebuke the Mail for hounding the judges is just as silly as the original headline. An independent judiciary needs no protection from free speech.

No, John, it's based on a deliberate misreading of the implications of the judgement.

Being 'reasonable' is for total f**king dickheads, agrees Britain
As Britain’s newspapers branded judges ‘enemies of the people’ for a legal ruling and compared the Brexit process to the horrors of the second world war, the public agreed that frothing at the mouth like a rabid dog is the best way forward.

Jeremy Corbyn says Labour will vote against Article 50 if the Prime Minister does not guarantee access to the single market
And don't forget that the Tory manifesto said this:

Life just just a bit more difficult for the government...although it could be argued that every country has access to the single market but I'd say that means within it.

Apologies if we've already had this (or, indeed if it's new but you simply don't give a fuck) but the Telegraph has gone a little bit more paywall, presumably finally coming to terms with the fact that people know how to delete cookies to avoid a limit on the number of articles they can read. Lots of their new content is now 'Premium' and without signing up (and paying) you can only read the opening.

Doesn't work in private windows either (just checked). It just means that about half their content is now behind a 'proper' paywall rather than the pretend one they had before. I suspect it will mean that even more of their online readership with spend more time at the guardian making btl there even more unbearable.

Not quite sure what to make of this one.

Controversial academy boss ‘on temporary leave’

https://www.theguardian.com/education/2 ... an-cleland
However, a spokesman for ATT said that the incident was not linked to the current “situation”, adding: “Academy Transformation Trust’s chief executive officer, Ian Cleland, and managing director, Joyce Hodgetts, are currently on temporary leave. The trust’s executive team – Claire Pritchard, director of resources, Lisa Crausby, principal improvement director, and Mike Giddings, director of finance – continue to lead the organisation, reporting into the board.”
I;m pretty sure that back in the days, the top executive post in an org was called the MD. This changed into CEO when companies went all American. So why have both?

The Observer view on the high court ruling on Brexit and parliament

"Yet castigating the judges and by extension, anybody who has the effrontery to agree with them, is exactly what the hard Tory Brexiters and their accomplices in the lie factories of Fleet Street have resorted to with a venom, vindictiveness and vituperation remarkable even by their standards. The will of the people has been thwarted by an “activist” judiciary. These bewigged, closet Remainers, members of the fabled “well-heeled liberal metropolitan elite”, are “enemies of the people”, they shriek. Some of these sleaze-peddlers even dipped into homophobia, highlighting the sexual orientation of one of the judges. Inexcusable. "

Terrifying for him. The Clinton Loving Gunman almost missed his queue.
The Republican nominee shielded his eyes and looked into the crowd and was then suddenly rushed off the stage as an incident unfolded at the front of the crowd.

Witnesses said panic began when someone said: “He’s got a gun.”

A number of politicians have said Theresa May must “make clear” that the independence of the judiciary was fundamental to democracy, describing the media tirade against the court decision as “chilling and outrageous” and "inciting hatred”.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/po ... 99176.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The incitement of hate
The Public Order Act 1986 made it an offence to use threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to stir up racial hatred in the street or in a public speech. The Act also made it an offence to display, publish or distribute written material that is threatening, abusive or insulting with intent to stir up racial hatred. In both cases, it remains an offence without such intent if hatred is likely to be stirred up regardless.

The Public Order 1986 was amended by the Racial and Religious Hatred Act 2006 which created a new offence; that of stirring up hatred against people on religious grounds.

The Public Order Act 1986 was further amended by the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 which created the offence of stirring up hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation with intent and such hatred was defined as towards persons of the same sex, the opposite sex or both.

There's something deeply ironic about an ardently pro-NRA, pro-no-regulation-of-weapons whatsoever group of people panicking about someone carrying a gun, don't you think? Surely all Donald would have to do is whip out his own gun and kill that person because, you know, having a gun stops other people with guns and will prevent other people with guns from killing people, blah, blah, blah. That is the warped logic these people believe, after all.

“At the same time as tightening their belts, they are being asked to support a group that has fared relatively well in recent years.
Someone who is actually left wing would be arguing that the young should be elevated to the same level as the old, not that the old should be brought down to the level of the young.
