Impressive show of ignoring the NHS crisis by most of the Sunday "newspapers" this morning. And the really significant thing is, that's not even surprising.

Good morning and a Happy New Year to everyone.
I thought that some might find this an active and informative NHS related site. I would like to draw your attention to the interesting post on 6 Jan which begins,

Good morfternoon.
Q: What does your plan for a “shared society” mean?

May says this is about recognising there is a role for government.(Politics Live, Guardian)
Is that it?

“Reports of chronic underfunding and overworked staff don’t fit in with the newspapers’ agenda,” the NHS explained.

“The only way to get their attention is by having your photo taken snorting cocaine off a prostitute before embarking on an all-night orgy of sex and drugs.”

He includes the usual explanation for increased demand:
We have an ageing population and higher expectations.
I found this the other day, it directly relates to primary care, but you could extrapolate from it that increased demand is a product of austerity. Deprivation leads to poor health.
https://abetternhs.net/2016/12/21/pover ... -patients/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Poverty medicine: General practice and vulnerable patients
The amount of vulnerability (chiefly due to deprivation) influences not just the amount of illness people suffer from, but the types of illnesses and the age at which they experience them. People in the most deprived communities suffer more disabling ill-health, more mental ill-health and more social ill-health (like loneliness which is more harmful than smoking or obesity) and do so 10-15 years earlier, than people in the least deprived communities.
Deprived communities have been the biggest losers of LA funding as well, so less social care. Perfect storm.

There was a Taxpayers Alliance person on Sky News press preview last night who said something I agree with, shock horror, about the NHS crisis.
'We have this every year, why, why haven't the government sorted it?' or words to that effect.

We didn't have it every year when Labour were in power. Only fair that those of us critical of that administration in some respects point that out.

governments..."

They've got that wrong.

1st Labour gov: 1924
2nd: 1929 followed by National government (Ramsay MacDonald's reputation never recovered)
3rd: 1945-1951: Labour's finest government under Attlee. Labour polled more than the Tories in 1951 but somehow lost. However, Churchill's government didn't dismantle Labour's achievements
4th: 1964-1970: Outgoing Tory chancellor: 'Sorry to leave it in such a mess old cock'. Wilson held a GE in 1966
5th: 1974-1979: Wilson inherits clusterfuck from Heath. See a pattern emerging?

They're counting Parliament's I think.

You actually measure government's by PM terms so there have been 8 Labour governments (eg 97-2010 was two).

Notice how many majorities capable of serving a full term Labour has won in last 50 years when not led by Blair.

Apparently May deliberately snubbed Andrew Marr for her first major interview of the new year. It's the first time since Marr's programme started in 2005 that the PM hasn't made his programme the venue for their new year interview. The reason is allegedly because the BBC are 'biased against Brexit'.

So off she popped to Uncle Rupert's Sky where she was evidently expecting kid glove treatment from Sophy Ridge. However I thought Ridge was a lot more challenging than Marr would have been, and May obviously didn't like it. Was there a bit of subtle sarcasm from Ridge when she thanked the chronically evasive May for an 'illuminating' interview? Notice how May just returned her thanks with silence and an icy glare ....

@nickyinnorfolk
Thank you for the clarification. I think the verbiage used in the report is confusing. I'll read it again when I'm fresher.

The Labour government here allocated an extra £50 million to the Welsh NHS this winter, up 10% from last year.
I don't understand why you get these "extra" payments, instead of a bigger whole amount being allocated upfront.

I guess facts change and you make sure you've got reserves.

Labour hasn't been returned to government because there's a lot of money to be made out of people and resources. Keeping a hold of power
is easier when it's in the hands of a few. Advertising and mainstream media aren't invested in for sport. Psychological manipulation is big business.
I refuse to lose heart entirely. Money, wealth and the power those confer aren't everything.
