Excellent piece (in my view) by Zoe Williams.

Of course it will not be read by those people that should read and digest but I am glad that someone in that now discredited "profession" has the guts to stand up to those with fascist tendencies.

All credit to Gary Lineker by the way.

I heard the piece on that on Today before I rose.

I remember the days when all Sodexho did was to supply our catering at work...the insidious takeover of public services by these companies is appalling - back door privatization calling itself "public sector reform". And no, I don't care who started or who continued it. I want it stopped.

Yes. I remember when I signed up for voluntary work for the local hospital. Turned out it was expected that I provide free labour for the privatised cleaning outfit.

And here's the report.

http://www.parliament.uk/business/commi ... hed-16-17/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
At the evidence hearing, the Schools Minister suggested a tutor-proof test is a 'holy grail'. The Education Committee recommends that if this is the case selection tests should not be the only basis for grammar school admissions. The Committee finds that the Government has yet to demonstrate how an admissions system could be designed in a manner which would be immune to gaming, or down to the ability to pay.
Yes, there's one thing that people know about said object...it has yet to be found.

What I found interesting was how Leave/Remain voters split.

If only REMAINERS voted ryou get Lab 35, Con 29, LD 19; if only LEAVERS voted Con 51, UKIP 29, Lab 11.

Shows how Cons are dependent on Remain voters for their high figure. whereas Labour aren't as dependent upon their small cohort of Leavers.

the Ukips figure looks high to me (14%). One reason I think Labour is very safe in Stoke (but not Copeland) is the collapse of Ukips. i expect that to get worse. That should shield the Tories for a while at least.

but yes, once the consequences of brexit become apparent, the Tories will pay a price and Labour will recover. I can't see the tories maintaining a 15 point average poll lead all the way through to 2020/

The Department for Work and Pensions has been accused of taking a “cavalier attitude” to closing 78 local jobcentres across the country after it emerged it had not even conducted an impact assessment of the policy.
Where we are people already have to travel 10 miles to the nearest jobcentre, £7.00 return. Our local jobcentre was closed many years ago. Fewer people unemployed obviously means fewer people using each jobcentre but a) they are still going to be living all over, rather than conveniently clustered around jobcentres and b) things change, a few months of recession and demand could go right back up again. This policy clearly reveals a lack of commitment to the provision of unemployment benefit going forward and as such is very worrying.

After the previous round of jobcentre closures, people were allowed to sign on "electronically" in certain areas if they lived some way away.

But that also seems to have been done away with now.

To add to the above, the claims that the Tories are running a paper campaign in Stoke are not entirely backed by accounts on the ground there.

(indeed, there are claims they have not totally given up on second place)
