O'Hagan reckons Reed was "despised locally".
Bit strong? Acted silly since 2015 but reasonably popular before, I thought.

That is pretty accurate tbh - though I think his increasing presence on Twitter was starting to jar with some even before the last GE.Tubby Isaacs wrote:O'Hagan reckons Reed was "despised locally".

(and the praise he got from media types on there definitely went to his head, I think)
Tbh I think that O'Hagan piece is rather good and honest, despite your quibble just above.

It is widely reported (and backed up by multiple non-Labour sources) that resentment at how he "flounced out" of his job was a significant factor in the byelection result.
Really? You honestly think people voted Tory because of that?
Seems to me like the kind of claim those floundering around for a way to blame the tiny cohort of "Bitterites" make.
It wasn't marginal. That being, you know, the problem.

Um yes, boundary changes before the 2010 GE *did* make it a marginal and the Tories targeted it heavily then for that reason (and had genuine hopes of winning - JR's result on that occasion was little short of outstanding and one of Labour's best in the country) The only landslide Labour victory in Whitehaven/Copeland since Mrs Thatcher came to power was in 1997 - the Tories have always had a solid base of support and an active local party.
It is a horrible defeat for all sorts of reasons, but the belief in much of the media that it is equivalent to Bolsover or Blaydon is pretty daft.

I rather doubt whether the likes of Ellie Mae have demonstrated great judgement over Corbs, by their own admission.

How can a seat that was the 30th most marginal seat *after* Labour lost so badly in 2015 be a "marginal"?
This is also mid-term, not a general election.

I met Gerald Kaufman at a dinner party twenty years ago, I didn't realise he was in his 60s then, he seemed so much younger, and was very funny. Annother by election, I wonder if Paul Nuttall will dare to run.
Anyway after a day in Prince Phillip hospital, I can confirm that the NHS in Wales is fucking brilliant.

Nuttall will fight the coming Leigh contest, if he dares to show his face anywhere againTemulkar wrote:I met Gerald Kaufman at a dinner party twenty years ago, I didn't realise he was in his 60s then, he seemed so much younger, and was very funny. I cant see UKIP winning in either, or the tories, but Im sure the 'narrative' won't change. Coup 2 seems to be dying on its arse as Red Velvet fails to appear once again, and Nuttall couldnt do the decent thing and win in Stoke, of course.AnatolyKasparov wrote:Nuttall will fight the coming Leigh contest, if he dares to show his face anywhere againTemulkar wrote:I met Gerald Kaufman at a dinner party twenty years ago, I didn't realise he was in his 60s then, he seemed so much younger, and was very funny.
