Supermarket inflation doubled last month as shoppers had to pay more for staples such as butter and tea, underlining expectations that household budgets will come under extra pressure in 2017.

Grocery inflation jumped to a near three-year high of 1.4% in the 12 weeks to 26 February, from 0.7% in the 12 weeks to 29 January, according to the consumer consultancy Kantar Worldpanel. The cost of fruit and vegetables – a large proportion of which are imported – also rose.
And this core goods inflation always hits the poorest hardest.
I've notice that grocery prices have gone up a great deal. It's not even single figure pennies at a time. It's 20p here, 50p there and so on. I know I'm a bit of a Luddite but, since barcoding for prices, I don't think people notice as much as they once did. Formerly, I'd get something out of the cupboard and see the price on the sticky label. And then see the new price on the replacement.

Edited - typo
Bad news, this. I've noticed the higher prices. Mr citizen and I are looking for a new wholesale bulk-buying club. It's worth buying food and household supplies in bulk, when possible. It's essential people get high-quality food. It's worth it. People stay healthy and in good condition. I try buying foods grown close-by and in season though it doesn't always work out. Time is precious and what's on the local shelf is sometimes all we'll get.

You mean quite apart from the fact that May would have to have her own backbenchers vote against the government in order to trigger said 'snap election'?

Especially when Ed Miliband was regularly attacked for living in an expensive London home, even though he was willing to introduce a mansion tax which would have been against his own personal best interests. Go figure.

Scargill's very attached to coal, which isn't really Corbyn's thing, despite his aside that earned him a bit of stick.

John Monks would probably confirm the quote as genuine or not. He's one of the Labour Brexit rebels in the Lords. Went on to EFTU after the TUC. Might be a bit past it now, but Labour could have used him much better before.

Peers in the House of Lords have voted down calls for a second referendum on the terms of the final Brexit deal by an overwhelming majority.
Labour's leader in the Lords, Baroness Smith of Basildon, said her party could not support the amendment and would abstain in the vote. She said there had been “no significant public demand for a second referendum” and no significant shift in public opinion about leaving the EU.

Jessica Elgot‏, political reporter at the Guardian has been tweeting:

- Jackie Walker has been referred for disciplinary action by NEC disputes committee for her Holocaust Memorial Day comments.

- Paul Davis, Wallasey CLP's vice chair has also been referred for incidents around Angela Eagle's leadership bid.

- Marc Wadsworth, the Momentum activist who confronted Ruth Smeeth at the launch of the Chakrabarti inquiry is also facing disciplinary panel. (Anyone remember the denials that he was even a Momentum member ?)

- Jackie Walker et al will have their cases heard by Labour NCC, a quasi-judicial body which can rule on expulsion from the party.

The names of those people who sit Labour's NCC are not public, but it's a serious business - there are defence and prosecution barristers

- Labour NEC on Wallasey CLP - currently suspended. The local party ordered to hold new elections for positions. Meetings will be supervised.

- Ken Livingstone's case had already been referred to NCC.

No date has been set for these hearings yet.

Lord Hill, the Conservative former European commissioner, tells Hogg than anything that complicates the Brexit negotiation will not help.

And he says that having a third party, like parliament, involved in a negotiation might help if the third party is pushing for a tougher solution. That could help the government get what it wants. But in this case, if parliament has the final say, EU leaders will see it as pushing for a softer solution, and so that would undermine the government’s position.
Don't see this really.

I think May could say "look, you want this off your back? I've got to get this through Parliament. Give me a bit more".

Leaked tape of Surrey's council tax government 'deal'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-surrey-39198308
The BBC has obtained a leaked recording of a council leader saying he struck a deal with the government before scrapping a 15% council tax hike.

The Prime Minister has repeatedly denied Surrey has been given what Labour calls "a sweetheart deal".

But on the recording, Councillor David Hodge said he had written government assurances and recordings of talks.

Mr Hodge said "every leader... will always have these conversations to try and get a better deal".
The government has been approached for a comment.

Peers have voted by 366 votes to 268 votes, a majority of 98, for parliament to have to agree outcome of Brexit talks - even if there is no deal.
Now then.

The ambush might be on in the Commons.

This is better by Labour. And by Corbyn, I need to be fair about that. He'd have OKed it.

Norwegian public broadcaster NRK, for example, is trialling a system that makes people answer a question about the article before they’re allowed to comment, thus ensuring any potential trolls are at least informed.
The study concluded that the reason someone trolls is based on two factors: the person’s mood and the tone of other comments.
