Personally, I'd keep quiet on that as much as possible.Even [Michael]Howard himself seems to have had second thoughts. On Channel 4 News last night, asked if he was “seriously suggesting” war with Spain, he replied: “Of course not.” But he did add: “I can see no harm in reminding them what kind of people we are.” (Politics Live, Guardian)

Spain tells UK not to lose its cool over Gibraltar in Brexit talks
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/ ... exit-talks
That was then, this is now. Brexit seems to have gone to some excitable people's headsSpain has urged the British government to keep a cool head in the negotiations over the future of Gibraltar after the former Conservative leader Michael Howard suggested Theresa May would be prepared to go to war to protect the territory as Margaret Thatcher once did over the Falklands.
“Someone in the UK is losing their cool and there’s no need for it,” said Spain’s foreign minister, Alfonso Dastis.
While he noted that Howard “hadn’t exactly said” that the UK would go to war over the issue, Dastis added: “Making comparisons with past situations like the Falklands is a little out of context. The Spanish government is a little surprised by the tone of comments coming out of Britain, a country known for its composure.”

I just think he's had more direct influence than anyone (except perhaps his proprietor) on the development of the absolute worst aspects of this country over the last 3-4 decades. To see that foulness enjoying a sort of renaissance is way too much to stomach. In any properly civilised society he would be a total fucking pariah for Hillsborough alone. Instead we have Brexit, and a sort of vindication for his ilk.AnatolyKasparov wrote:Rod Liddle runs him close, tbh. As does a certain former Met Office admin worker.NonOxCol wrote:Morning.

I've not followed Russian current affairs very closely but I neglected to post this last week when I saw it reported. The images of Navalny getting hauled away disturb me.
Opposition leader Alexei Navalny detained amid protests across Russia
"Hundreds of protesters have been detained by riot police in cities across Russia, as some of the largest anti-government protests in years swept the country. The call to protest came from the opposition politician and anti-corruption campaigner Alexei Navalny, who was himself detained at the Moscow demonstration. A monitoring group said at least 850 people were detained in Moscow alone, while the news agency Tass gave a figure of 500. Police said about 7,000 people attended the Moscow rally on Sunday, though the real number may have been much higher."
