At least they can spend the savings on economic stimulus. I think there is still some way to go on this, the current terms are still causing tension between the IMF and EU. But it will kick the can down the road again. Incidentally why do people want Dijsselbloem to resign early? I think he has been an utter disaster for the EU, for Greece and for general humanity, but who has he actually offended (other than the Greeks obviously)?

He upset all of Southern Europe a while ago, with a Clarkson-style intervention.

I don't know how different anybody else from the main creditor countries would be, policy wise. While we're rightly critical of austerity here, the founders of the Euro (among lots they got wrong) set a fairly reasonable 60% debt limit/ target. When countries like Greece have basically a 30 year history of not even trying, you can understand why others get hawkish.

While Greece ought never to have been allowed in, I didn't realise till recently quite how bad Belgium had been on debt.

Not good, not good at all. The Democrats are hoping Trump will implode in 4 years and they will reap the benefits in the midterms. They had better be right, otherwise this could get really bad. The USA has briefly been overtaken as the leader of the Free world by Germany, but their lack of military means that it isn't a sustainable solution. We need a return to sane US global leadership, in the meantime anything that allows the Republicans to avoid having to engage in consensus is a worry.
