So Len, bless, has been on a spectacular rant in the G, none of that is really worth comment and it will start a whole set of pointless flaming. But what struck me as interesting is two points.

1. Len has to date distanced himself from Corbyn, at least a little, either because he doesn't see him as an asset or because he wants to be seen promoting Unite not Labour. That has changed with his article claiming Jeremy can be PM if Labour unites.

2. Shouting conspiracy on the basis people are campaigning against you in an election (sort of the point of an election, people campaign against you) isn't a great look.

Now I had always assumed that Len had this election sewn up (although Unite didn't ballot members on the decision to support Corbyn against Smith which is interesting) does anybody know if Len is genuinely worried about the result?

I've been thinking about the line-up (economy bods) at Donald Trump's pre-bombing meeting - trade deal with Russia or sanctions against Syria?

Is his recent re-discovery of the genius of Jeremy Corbyn possibly because he (LM) isn't so confident of winning? Is he lining up his cover story just in case the worst happens? If he wins, will his ardour for Jeremy Corbyn again cool?

The Guardian slagging off Gordon Brown for 2 years in the run up to 2010 meant it didn't really matter what party the paper supported. And then there was whatever the hell happened to the New Statesman. And the BBC.

The Independent has got less bad recently, but there hasn't been a pro-Left wing mainstream news source for a decade.

A Birmingham mosque answered the “hatred and division” of an English Defence League rally by hosting a “best of British” tea party, as the far-right group’s demonstration passed off without a major incident.

The party at the city’s Central mosque, for which the building was decked out with union flag bunting, was open to all and organised in direct response to the EDL event in the city centre on Saturday afternoon.

The mosque’s chairman, Muhammad Afzal, said: “We are just holding this event to show EDL that Birmingham is a peaceful city and we are all united irrespective of colour, race or religion.”

Morning!

I approached the Groan piece on McCluskey with trepidation having read the comments above, but I actually quite enjoyed it and it was interesting to hear about some of the disputes he's worried about.

It says it was an hour long interview. Here's the bit about Coyne
“Coyne’s campaign is run by a cabal of West Midlands MPs who are trying to abuse Unite’s democracy by fighting a proxy war against Corbyn. Now that is regrettable and I believe it will be rejected by our members. This campaign, this election, is about Unite. It has nothing to do with Corbyn.”

It has been, he says, “a shameful campaign full of lies, innuendoes and smears”.
It's uncompromising but hardly a rant is it?

I'm not very good at reading the undertones in these pieces (I'm no Kremlinologist!), but I have to say Len sounds confident of winning and wants Unite and Labour to get on with the job when he has. If I'm right, then good luck to him.

The abolition of retail roaming surcharges, now scheduled for 15 June 2017, will enable consumers to call text and use mobile data for the same cost at home and while travelling in another EU country. and transfer data across borders from another EU member state for the same cost as at home.

Britain will receive 60 million euros from the European Union to repair damage caused by the floods in the winter of 2015-16, the MEP in charge of the dossier said.

Britain had asked for EU support to rebuild infrastructure damaged by heavy rains.

“When one member state has a problem, others actively collaborate and help. The UK will benefit from EU solidarity despite Brexit and the triggering of Article 50”, said the lawmaker in charge of the dossier, Portuguese conservative José Manuel Fernandes.

LONDON — Theresa May risks being held hostage by her own voters in Brexit negotiations, according to new polling data that shows Conservative supporters oppose any immigration system that does not lead to a sustained fall in the number of migrants coming to the U.K.

I want McCluskey to win against Coyne who ought to running for leader of UKIP. Not even I see it worth voting for Coyne as a price worth paying for weakening Corbyn.

McCluskey has though created a silly circus by rewriting the timetable around himself and Corbyn. That's not hos unions need to look.

Loach is an enemy of Labour, you can't really pin the blame for him on Corbyn. He makes good films and clearly believes in making the case for the most vulnerable in society, but he never really grew out of teenage politics. Another one hoping for a glorious revolution to sweep away our corrupt democracy.

Plus all that leaning on people to get him nominated that so amused Guido, plus his abuse of disciplinary process to threaten his opponent, plus the whole accomodation thing. I have no view on Coyne, but McCluskey and his inner circle (dig a little deeper into relationships) are exactly the opposite of what a Union should look like.

I'm not blaming Corbyn for Loach. I'm saying Loach has let Corbyn down.

What is "Change Britain", exactly? One does get rather lost amongst this plethora of ginger groups ;)
Good question. Think it's something Gove has been associated with.

You should have a view of Coyne, TE. And that view should be that he is a terrible candidate (who has flirted with racism, amongst other things)

I am a long term critic of Len, but if I had a vote here my only choice would be to abstain (unless I could bring myself to vote for the "spoiler" Trot candidate as a protest)

* This was the piece I read btw https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... servatives" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But I'm not sure he has Tubby.

In the space of an hour long interview, McCluskey was asked about Coyne and Corbyn. It was a reasonable enough topic to raise and Mccluskey gave a firm, and in my view accurate, response.

But there was so much more in there of interest. IMHO it was the Groan seizing, inevitably, on this one aspect that made a potentially very useful and informative exchange into a "circus".

Good to see Emily Thornberry getting some plaudits for her Marr interview.

She would be so much better than Boris IMO!

I just meant calling the early election inevitably made it a circus.

I didn't read the article here. As I say, hope he beats Kipper Coyne.

Thanks for that Tubby. Yes I've no idea why he called it early.

Genuinely cheering news in all respects.
We are used to seeing off the EDL in creative ways! The police in particular have developed great policies for doing this peaceably.

I have some amazing memories of one of these annual incursions when protesters were directly threatened by these numpties. The police organised a huge protective kettle for us, where we sat in protective and solitary splendour, peaceably drinking tea, eating biscuits and intermittently engaging with a curious public through the barrier! There were about 30 of us, and the fountains, and of course the Floozie and Druva Mistry's sardonic camp beasties, and of course the Iron man, and believe me the public laughed along with us. The police made sure we could get in and out safely and were kept informed, and while they did so contained the EDL turnout who arrived well soused and eventually turned on each other when there was no-one else to attack. We spent a hilarious afternoon listening to the ambulance sirens as they came to pick up the human debris. I am glad to say these idiots were so drunk that they were incapable of inflicting lasting damage, though they did at one point attack an innocent pile of bricks destined to become part of our new library! The televised news footage of their antics was a hoot.

Yesterdays efforts were great, and the photo of the young Brummie girl eyeballing one of these apologies for human beings is a classic. Well done her. I had personal friends who took positive action yesterday, engaging inthis and other community based efforts. I am proud of my city, and hope the news reaches Trump and his cohorts who declared Birmingham a no-go zone etc.

In fact tea seems to be a theme! Other cities could copy.

Bristol had a slightly more novel way of upstaging the EDL last year. Not sure it will catch on as well as tea-drinking though, which strikes me as a bit more for everybody!

The option,if so wished to use agreed PROXY extra costs allowance to access the Motorbility scheme.Far from a moot point. For the media, even "sympathetically" to misportray and thus ignore the many people who do not take that option, indeed is not an option that can be practically utilised only facillitates misanthropic Governmental intentions. They will see the in effect CONTIGENT on working increase costs,as above as job done.Meanwhile, those unable to access the scheme and/or not in work can return to their lives of isolation, preferably curtains closed.
It is a shockingly stupid measure, which utterly ignores the fact that people have been paying for their cars with the mobility component of their much misunderstood DLA/PIP awards. It has been a cost effective way of levelling things for people with mobility difficulties, in work and out, and easy to administer. It has been a vicious and vindictive cut with no purpose other than to further disable already disadvantaged people, USING THEIR OWN DISABILITY AWARD to punish them. Or their own 'no longer existing award' because their disabablement is denied on spurious grounds.

Can't do links but think it was about his retirement date and wanting to be in office for long enough to support Corbyn into government.

Friends who know much more about unions than me say Unite have done some very good stuff under McCluskey, fair play to him.

@seeingclearly

But the extra costs recognised contingent on work but mysteriously disappears/reduces otherwise as far as DWP goes?Of course there will also be offset costs to the NHS and SS caused from reductions/removals from those where the scheme is not a feasible option.Realise I am.ploughing a lonely furrow in pursuance of the its a PROXY line and whilst fully recognising the removal of the ability to access to the scheme and my call/reminder not to forget the many where it wasn't anyway.
