Nitrogen dioxide pollution causes 23,500 of the 40,000 premature deaths from dirty air each year, according to the government’s own data. In April last year MPs said air pollution was a public health emergency.

The founder of a strategic voting initiative that helped propel Justin Trudeau’s Liberal party into office in Canada believes Gina Miller’s campaign for tactical voting in the UK election has a “great chance” of blunting Theresa May’s bid to consolidate power.

The EU’s center shifts every time a country enters or leaves the bloc. According to Kate Connolly of The Guardian, the new heart of the EU was determined by French cartographers at IGN, a geographic engineering institute in Paris. The exact coordinates fall in the rapeseed field of one Karin Kessler, who tells Barfield that she will be quite happy to have the EU flag flying in her backyard. But she also opined that “the fact that it's only happening because of this Brexit is a bit of a shame.”

While the leader of open and democratic Britain insists that talks should proceed in maximum secrecy on both sides, the “secretive and undemocratic” EU is insisting that there must be transparency and public accountability. Contrary to her earlier assurances that “I want the EU to be successful”, the Prime Minister’s language in Downing Street suggested that she would like the EU to implode.

the Brits:
Her rhetoric, and its enthusiastic reception on the British right, increases the likelihood that negotiations will break down. Chancellor Merkel was clearly among the Prime Minister’s targets and her criticisms of British "illusions" will have stung May. Cumulative irritation with British demands for exceptional treatment has burst out in a hardening of positions from other governments – the outcome of successive negotiations, of David Cameron’s tantrum at the European Council of December 2011, of Boris Johnson’s shallow flippancy and David Davis’s arrogance, of the sustained aggression of Ukip and Conservative MEPs in the European Parliament, and the anti-German and anti-European excesses of the British press.

So if Labour gain or lose seats, you’re measuring their performance against the middle of Ed Miliband’s time in charge nationally.
In 2013, Labour gained nearly 300 seats and the Tories lost just under 300 seats.
The Lib Dems lost just over 100 seats, as the party’s star was plummeting due to its broken pledges on tuition fees.
And UKIP gained just over 100 seats as it won momentum over the issues of the EU.

This is seriously bad news. The snoopers charter is basically going to screw encryption.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/05/04 ... ers_draft/

Now a disclaimer - security is hard. I am not an expert and I am wildly speculating here. In due course I imagine the experts will provide a view.

Second disclaimer. I do not work on any projects related to cryptography for any government organisation. I have no knowledge outside that which is public domain.

Reading between the lines for this to work your ISP has to be able to break into (or pass the key to law enforcement) any encrypted session. Broadly speaking decent crypto such as AES 256 GCM are classed by NIST as quantum computing resistant. Maybe GCHQ can crack them but not without significant compute capacity.

Note: It used to be the case that it was hard to get a huge quantity of compute on demand. Thanks to Amazon not an issue any more, so weak crypto can now be broken by a well resourced criminal.

So to make this practical, without actually banning strong encryption and breaking popular apps, they are probably going to have to violate the public key trust chain and use a man in the middle attack. They will have to do this continually as just doing it on demand is liable to detection. In effect when you contact your bank, they will spoof you to the bank and the bank to you.

This is similar in approach to the Lenovo scandal of a few years ago, although one hopes they won't be quite so stupid as to use just one cert.

https://arstechnica.co.uk/security/2015 ... nnections/

So your banking session will be vulnerable to spooks, and also to anybody else who can get into that system. Given this introduces a vulnerability and given the sophistication of state sanctioned malware these days, we can now be compromised by incompetent ISPs or an incompetent government. Snowdon had very little clearance, who knows what a real spy/criminal could do.
