Which is why anecdotes that are contrary to the overwhelming evidence need to be challenged.
If we want to effect change in a democracy we need to be ruthless. As ruthless as the Tories are. Silly over optimism is counterproductive, put at its lowest.
Who said it is silly optimism? Only you. I was reporting that there is zero enthusiasm for a tory win in my neck of the woods and among the people I know. Zero. I don't believe that will translate into a win, but it is certainly very different from the dubious comments that got thrown around about 'weak' Ed, and there has been a sea change on Corbyn, and people I thought would never support him seem to be. These include a bevy of former schoolmates, who like me were privately educated, people who have worked in the media, people working or who did till recently work in council employment, people who are carers, and a mixture of free floating people of various ages, quite a few who have worked both here and abroad. Not convinced by Ed, but wanted a Labour win last time, some not voters usually, but this time round sick enough of the ever rightward march we are on to want to stop it. Like most people they have children, or siblings, or parents, or friends who are now feeling the heavy end of the tory stick.
I am fine with you saying this is anecdotal. It is your perpetual sneer that gets to me, as if nobodies experience or opinion is more valid than yours.
I spent a large portion of last year in the (hot topic of the moment) NHS, was there for the referendum and its aftermath. Many people working there then were outraged at the way things were going and voted out, and for Farage, seeing him as potentially an answer (blame the BBC), now his party has shown itself to be the hollow promise it always has been you can bet they are the UKIP renegers, and you can bet they won't be voting tory either.
So my guess is, contrary to what the media would have you believe, and contrary to your own spin, Hugo, that things are rather closer than you think. There are a lot of marginals. The last election was not the lansdslide the tories proclaimed. This time England is aware of the difference that changes in Scotland have made. My prediction is that The tories will win, perhaps with a slightly increased majority of seats, but that Labour will take an increased share of the vote, but will still be fighting fit, as they seem to be now, surprisingly.
Then it will be whether May can survive for five yesrs. She is looking knackered now, and hasn't got any charm or charisma at all. Things could change, but I am not predicting results on that. I am as pragmatic as I can be on this, I know there is, contrary to what you always say, a huge media machine rooting for the tories, todays efforts included. But don't you dare imply that good socialist democracy is gone from here, when all around I see signs it is alive and kicking.
