Total workforce

There were 200,922 workers employed by the 43 police forces in England and Wales on 31 March 2016, a decrease of 6,807 or 3.3% compared with a year earlier.
The number of police officers fell by 2.5% compared with the year to March 2015, to 124,066.
This was a larger fall than the previous two years, but not as large as the three years prior to that.

[Police officers, Police Community Support officers, Designated officers, Police staff]...between September 2010 and September 2016, the numbers for all four types decreased.
There has been a 13% cut in police officers, a 22% cut in police staff and a 36% cut in PCSOs.
Last year, UNISON produced a detailed report on the impact of cuts to police staff, called No time for community policing anymore.
We asked our PCSO members to tell us about the impact of government cuts on neighbourhood policing, and the results were saddening.

Enough is enough, coincidentally enough, emblazoned the banners of police officers when they marched against police cuts imposed by Theresa May, who has been home secretary for six of the last seven years. In 2015 – when championing yet another round of police cuts – May slammed the Police Federation for scaremongering and repeatedly “crying wolf” over the impact of such cuts.

Jeremy Corbyn has now recorded a TV clip clarifying his remark early saying he supported calls for Theresa May to resign over police cuts. (See 12.39pm.) He is now saying he just wants people to vote her our of office on Thursday.

To be fair to Corbyn, asking if he backed calls for Theresa May to resign was a fairly daft question in the first place because the election makes any assessment of whether May is or or is not fit to hold office irrelevant. But if Corbyn had sidestepped the question, and answered it originally as he is answering it now, he would have saved himself a bit of bother. (Politics Live, Guardian)

This is particularly interesting (from the second link):

That is, of course, because many civilian staff have been made redundant and their roles taken by trained police officers.

But finally, the penny has dropped:

As part of a new strategy, Policing 2026, he said police officers would be released from corporate and backroom roles, with priority given to frontline operations and a more visible community presence.

The SNP decision to create a single Scottish force (under their control) resulted in a £20M annual VAT bill for Police Scotland. Locally controlled forces could claim back VAT. (HMRC warned that this was the rule, but the SNP ploughed on regardless and then moaned at the 'unfair' Westminster rule)! They did exactly the same to the Fire Service.

Incompetent as TM is, she's an amateur compared with Salmond & Sturgeon.

That is not what I said.

ICM's result is dependent on the various age groups and demographics turning out in EXACTLY THE SAME proportions as last time. They are quite open about this.

There is at least some evidence that this will not be the case.

(and the 44% turnout of 18-24 years olds in 2015 is not - contrary to what some have asserted - "normal" but in fact very much on the low side even in recent elections)

I don't see what the alternative to an adjustment based upon past history is. Might be higher this time. Might be lower as the election is not as finely balanced. Who knows?

There are lots of alternatives to just using a basis on one election which had comparatively low participation from one key demograph....

British GE are too infrequent to have great models which probably is why the polls are so crap - the issue raised that polls may influence the final result is a good one, and one has to ask the value

The methodologies used can be discussed and compared, but there are plenty of equally valid assumptions

The raw data suggests a very close race....the differentials are in the assumptions
