Morning.

What a night that was !

Catastrophic decision by Theresa May & I expect she'll be gone within a week.

As for Labour - wow, some truly fantastic results and all credit to everyone involved.

Corbyn has proved me wrong and I don't mind admitting it. I still don't like him but he obviously has something that made so many want to come out and vote so kudos to him.

The next few days will be tantalising - will she stay or will she go; will they govern as a minority govt or can they join a coalition with the DUP; will Corbyn be invited to form a govts.

Fascinating stuff - I love it !

Morning all.

Politics, bloody hell.

Glad to see you here pk1, here's hoping we as a party (and as a forum!) can now pull together. 40% on a good turnout, that's a lot of Labour voters.

Sturgeon must be happy that the focus will be on May, that was an awful night for the SNP.

Am now going to try to snatch a little sleep - any chance yesterday's thread can be locked now that this one is going?

Shame about my own seat - we were getting optimistic in the final week but more than one person said it would be unfair to chuck Trudy out after just a few months and that she "deserved a chance". Never mind, we are getting this one and Carlisle back next time - whenever that is :)

And I think that John Woodcock was as stunned as everybody else was to be returned in Barrow. Hopefully he can reflect a bit now.

More later.......

Morning All!

Well well. Amen to the sentiments above. If we're strong now who knows what we can achieve.

Here in Colne Valley we had a quite remarkable night, with the Lib Dem vote collapsing completely to Labour's advantage. Bye bye slimy Jason and congratulations Thelma Walker MP (Lab.).

As the Conservatives could be relying on Democratic Unionist support to effectively govern here are some of the more interesting parts of the DUP manifesto, for those of you who haven’t already memorised it:

The party is pro-Brexit, with a pledge to get “the best Brexit deal.”
“Support the maintenance of the pensions ‘triple lock’”, which the Conservatives have said they will scrap and replace with the less costly “double lock”
“Resist any assault on important universal benefits like the winter fuel allowance” which is the Conservatives have said they will now only give to the poorest pensioners
“The TV licence fee is a highly regressive tax which was designed for a different era” the manifesto says, and it recommends the licence fee is cut and then abolished

During the election campaign, Theresa May insisted that “No deal is better than a bad deal”. And, with no clear Conservative majority in the House of Commons, “No deal” now looks considerably more likely.

Morning.

Hey, this is way better than expected. I have four main things pissing me off though, in order:

1. How does Rudd get to ask for x number of recounts, they find a discrepancy of about 300 on recount x and then it stops? That just stinks and will never not stink.
2. Hoey.
3. Goldsmith.
4. As mentioned overnight, the centrist wailing and rending of garments over Clegg is truly vomit-inducing. It was not just tuition fees, the wider damage to himself and his party was self-inflicted, and on TV last night he was still justifying his actions in 2010 on the basis of the UK being "next domino to fall". Fuck him. Sad loss to the pro-EU bloc but that's it.

Theresa May 'no intention of resigning'
Heather Stewart
Senior Conservatives have confirmed that Theresa May has no intention of resigning this morning. They plan instead to work on forming a government - most likely by making a pact with the DUP, which has 10 MPs in Northern Ireland, and could deliver her a wafer-thin majority.

I feel quite representative of the country today, or at least the "progressive" part - quite strong reservations about Corbyn to start with, then a grudging acceptance of him and finally a support that, if not overwhelming, recognises he has strengths that, on balance, far outweigh the weaknesses. Hope (and expect, now) that he'll build on this performance to up his game in Parliament

Thanks AK. I am actually terrified more so than before the election. Meale was pretty much a quiet man round these parts, but he was always going to be for me at least, a last resort in the appeals process re PIP/WCA.

1. The DUP having power is very very bad news for NI.

2. The SNP slump kills independence for now.

3. Corbyn had a remarkable campaign and did really well. My objection to him (as I've said 100+ times) was not that he would lose, though I thought he would, He did very well.

but

4. Damp squib time. The 2015 election which led to the 2016 referendum, which was lost, were both more important. The political issue of the day is Brexit. Countless billions of £s turn on it, that could be spent on making the UK better. Can it now be softened or even stopped?

5. Related to 4, the reason May went now was because of the adverse economic consequences of Brexit that are now hitting, and only just being felt. If she carries on, with a slender majority, we'll have PM Jez.

6. Blairism was already dead in the Labour party. This just buried it.

Morning.

Wow. What a fantastic result. To come from so far back in the polls to 40% in so short a time.

I've only just seen the Ceredigion result. 75% turnout.
Mark Williams lost to Plaid after three recounts, by about a hundred votes. Labour polled more than the Tories and moved from fifth to third place. The constituency has gone from a straight two way fight to something Labour can build on.

Corbyn fought a strong campaign, obviously with a lot of help from feet on the ground.
He won back the respect of my husband and myself in the last few weeks, and obviously others felt the same.
Good policies in the manifesto too. My postal vote went to Labour.

Labour have achieved what I hoped for when I voted for Corbyn in 2015.
Much as I loved Ed M, Corbyn has started change.

Hope everyone is ok.

It would be nice to see Tubby back. Hope all is ok with him. I have met him in the real world [and his lovely girlfriend]. The idea that he is some sort of Tory is just ridiculous.

Off now to have a second breakfast - will be eating my hat with a sprinkle of brown sugar.
Never thought it would happen but am so relieved. So much better than waking to a Tory landslide.

Well done to all those here who worked to achieve it.

and...will phrase this carefully as have no wish to provoke sleeping beasts...
it would be nice if those who accused people who were terrified Labour would be ground into the mud last night of being Tories etc. show some sign of understanding. To be concerned about the party being left as an unelectable rump does not make one a Tory.

And, if Corbyn had shopped for a new suit and shirt a little sooner, [yes, it should not matter, but it does to voters] had less baggage that the right wing press have been able to use to pillory him, we could have been waking to PM Corbyn this morning.
