From it:
I don't think anyone, except maybe tangentially, thought that his comment was directed at the victims. He was, however, suggesting that the protesters should have gone through "legitimate" channels - those channels having so signally failed in the past. He seems incapable of understanding the anger and anguish and the total, criminal uselessness of the Council both in the past and in the present.‘In no way whatsoever was the short message directed at the unfortunate victims of the Grenfell Tower fire and I am distraught that some people have interpreted it in this way.

These disastrous figures show that Conservative Ministers have washed their hands of any responsibility to build the homes families on low and middle incomes need. The number of government-funded social rented homes built has plummeted by 97 per cent since 2010.

Private. Can Do Whatever And Tory Government Doesn't CareI worked with a group of residents living in Grenfell Tower...The first meeting of tenants in early 2015 was attended by around 100 residents. Each spoke of the historical neglect of the building, of the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (KCTMO) failing to undertake basic but vital maintenance or improvements. Residents recounted incidents such as disturbing power surges in which appliances “blew up”.
I’d been asked to help the residents organise and campaign on the specific issue of a major refurbishment of the building being undertaken by a private contractor. The residents [were] mainly social tenants but also people renting from private landlords in flats previously purchased under right-to-buy....Their unequivocal message was one of a failure by KCTMO and the private contractor to respond to their concerns, let alone take any action about them.
Re: Tuesday 20th June 2017
(cJA emphasis)Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation
On 1 April 1996 responsibility for managing 9,760 properties passed from The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea to a tenant management organisation. These are located across the borough and range from studio flats to four bedroom houses.
The Council still owns the properties and retains responsibility for strategic housing policies and homeless people. The relationship between the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation (KCTMO) and the Council is governed by a management agreement, which covers all areas of the landlord business. Whilst the KCTMO still enjoys a close working relationship with the Council, it is a completely separate company.

I worked for a woman who was also a dear friend. The last time I saw her she was 92 years old, physically strong, she suffered from dementia. She refused to call herself old or accept growing older. I asked her the alternative to growing older She immediately replied, 'growing younger'. We're both fine with that and I highly recommend it.HindleA wrote:Happy birthday for tomorrow, have you started the counting backwards thing yet? I am a young(er) voter, now(maybe just me)

I'd like some justice, please, as soon as possible. This won't do. Current government are seven years into not just not good enough but outright too harmful for too many people and country.Tories have twice blocked Labour legislation to make rented homes – including council houses – safer.
We’ve updated this article since it was originally published on 16 June 2017.
Since 2015, Labour has put two pieces of legislation before Parliament to try and improve housing safety for council houses and privately rented properties.
The Tories have blocked both. We take a look at what happened.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfr ... may-brexit
To win next time, Labour must provide a strong opposition to the Tories, stand up for the values of our voters, and continue to fight for the interests of all – not least young people who have the most to lose from an extreme Tory Brexit and who voted for the first time in 2017 for Labour, thinking we would stop the Tories in their tracks. This has to mean fighting unambiguously for membership of the single market. At the very least we should strongly oppose May’s decision to take membership off the table in these negotiations. An ambitious and confident alternative government – with Corbyn at the helm – should not throw in the towel as May has done, but could seek membership with reforms on immigration and the other matters we seek.

If this parliament makes it to 2021/22 - unlikely at the moment I know, but it is IMO harder to force an early election than some realise - then its not impossible that all of May, Corbyn and even Cable (assuming he is elected, as is overwhelmingly likely) could be gone.adam wrote:I wonder if, now that they've had to accept that Corbyn is not electoral suicide, one of the Con's plans and desires for holding on as long as possible is that he will be significantly more 'old' come the next fixed-term election.AnatolyKasparov wrote:If he gets it, that must be the oldest set of leaders the three main parties have had since...........well, universal suffrage at least?
