Draft language will come after weeks of secrecy surrounding bill to repeal Affordable Care Act, which could see Senate vote as early as next week

Excellent news - the council's response after the fire was absolutely woeful. The council should step down as well and force new elections for the whole Borough.

Inspections have found more flats with combustible cladding of the kind used on Grenfell Tower, May says

May says 151 homes were destroyed. Most of those were in the tower, but some were in the immediate vicinity.

She says people will be rehoused in equivalent homes. Some 68 flats have already been offered at cost price in a new block of flats, she says.

She says no survivors will be forced to move somewhere they don’t want to go. She says if any MPs hears of this happening, they should get in touch with the government.

May says that “for any guilty parties, there will be nowhere to hide.”

There will be an inquiry. She says she expects it to publish an interim report as soon as possible.

She says, although she does not want to say now what definitely caused the fire, checks are being carried out on flats to see if they also have combustible cladding of the type used in Grenfell Tower.

She says this morning she received reports saying some flats do have this cladding.

Inspections have found more flats with combustible cladding of the kind used on Grenfell Tower, May says. She says those buildings will be made safe.
She says 100 tower blocks a day are being inspected.

More information will be released later about where these flats are, she says.

She says these buildings will be made safe. No one will be forced to live in homes that are not safe.

Brexit gives rise to new political identities – new report, one year on from EU referendum, finds
http://ukandeu.ac.uk/brexit-gives-rise- ... =hootsuite" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The report is 62 pages, for masochists. From the summary, my bold.
Implications for the UK’s regions and nations

One year on from Brexit, the report shows that there is little to indicate the UK Government has engaged seriously with the devolved administrations. This will be particularly striking when EU powers – or ‘competences’- start to come back to the UK. The UK Government has indicated that it intends to reaffirm Westminster’s supremacy but after nearly 20 years of devolution, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland argue that powers that return from Brussels over devolved matters like agriculture must go to them, along with appropriate means to finance them. A constitutional clash over such powers may provoke further moves towards Scottish independence.

Highly sensitive issues have been thrown-up in Northern Ireland following the referendum. The report’s authors note if it is not handled well there is potential for “significant disquiet”, both from staunch nationalists opposed to any physical manifestation of a north-south border, as well as hard-line unionists whose identity demands free movement with the rest of the UK.

The report finds that UK regions that voted Leave tend to be those most dependent on EU markets for their prosperity and are most likely to be exposed to Brexit. Compounding this problem, unlike recently constituted city-regions, these areas effectively have no representation. The final UK-EU agreement is likely to have very different impacts on the UK, potentially undermining efforts towards economic rebalancing.

High Court Rules that applying the reduced benefit cap to lone parents with children under two is unlawful

Will go to appeal, given 86% of those capped, even with the Government being forced to exempt receivers of CA but not Income Support on the basis of caring ,stupidly enough, are not expected to work(although may be in work),the same principles apply for many.

High court judgment on benefit cap seems to assume causing poverty is a negative. Look forward to DWP appeal arguing that was the point.
I mean this seriously: point of cap was to cut through usual constraints on what benefit policy does in individual cases. Poverty shmoverty.
Breaking link between entitlement & need, which was intention, inevitably causes poverty. Feature not bug.

No surprises at all here, but whilst the government hold on to power this in many ways is what parliament will be all about

Can the Tories cling on, or should we brace ourselves for another election?
The so-called great repeal bill, the only big commitment in the government’s programme, is likely to be extremely vague. It will repatriate all the laws and regulations that have been made in Europe in the past 40 years into UK law, but there will be little detail. That will depend on the detail that emerges in negotiation. The government would like the Commons to give it a blank cheque by allowing the detail to be settled in so-called secondary legislation which MPs have little chance to scrutinise. Labour would rightly see that as a dereliction of duty: it would open the prospect of the kind of bonfire of regulations that the Tory right dreams of.

worth a repeat
"
The only truly honest proponents of the benefit cap are those who are too uninformed or too far out of the loop to be party to the backroom consensus: the only truly honest critics are those who refuse to say they support it in principle. Of course, this is politics, pitched at a somewhat more dispiriting level even than what we are used to but still the only process by which the worst effects of the coalition’s policies can be mitigated. So those who judge that an inoculation with a small dose of intellectual dishonesty is a price worth paying for the chance of preventing some of the most arbitrary impacts of the cap have a point. But there are costs attached to this strategy, in terms of the quality of political debate and more generally in the endorsement it gives to a big untruth about the social security system and those who are relying on it. On balance, I think the latter considerations should win out. A little dishonesty only helps if you’ve already decided to go along with the big lie."

Difficult to argue against this given the evidence.

Academies have failed as ‘battering ram for high standards’, argues leading education academic

https://www.tes.com/news/school-news/br ... es-leading
Lord Adonis was the architect of the Labour government’s academies programme. He described the policy as a “battering ram for high standards” in an interview with The Independent in 2011.

In her lecture, Professor Francis will look at the evolution of the academies programme from its launch in 2002 to the present day.

She will argue that the “explosion of academisation” when Michael Gove was education secretary resulted in “the prioritisation of quantity rather than quality”.

This meant academy sponsors “were not subject to rigorous checks of effectiveness” and their achievements were not properly monitored before they were handed further schools. Rapid growth of chains, occasionally “reaching into diverse geographical areas”, resulted in some performing poorly and having their academies removed and rebrokered.
All of this was so obviously going to happen. But numbers counted so that they could then argue that we've "reached tipping point" i.e. the rest of you might as well go too.
