"The Britons were endlessly lied to and deceived," Schaeuble told a conference according to Reuters. When the Brexit campaigners "happened to be successful, the ones who did it ran away because they said they can't take responsibility". In the days after the vote, Prime Minister David Cameron, who called the referendum, resigned, and several prominent leave campaigners dropped out of the race to succeed him.

I caught the very end of QT last night and someone asked, if the DUP are going to get NI £2bn for supporting the Tories, can Devon & Cornwall get £4bn for their 16 MPs, if they support the government?adam wrote:I don't think many laws apply to what goes in in parliament. Individual MPs are elected as representatives of their communities, to use their judgement or otherwise on how to act and are not delegates, and are not delegated to act in a certain way (the idea being that if they don't represent their constituents to their constituents' content then they'll be voted out).citizenJA wrote:Is that even legal?PorFavor wrote:What's going on with the DUP deal? I wonder if the DUP themselves initiated the idea (ie threatened to withold their usual support if they didn't get some sort of pay-off) on account of Theresa May's incredibly weakened position.
I understand it's an MPs' job to represent their constituencies and use their time in office getting what communities need.
'If our community isn't given special funding, we'll not support you in government' - is an altogether different thing, isn't it? Have I misunderstood? I may very well have done.
If the DUP's membership don't like what their party is doing they can kick up a stink but that seems very unlikely. The DUP can ask for whatever they want from the government. The issue won't be whether they're allowed to, it will be how much the government give them, and how much it pisses off the other nations/regions and so on.

I then made the mistake of watching This Week. Had some woman who was one The Apprentice, banging on about "left wing thugs in balaclavas", Alan Johnson having another pop at Corbyn and Momentum and Mel Philips (I didn't watch that). It says a lot when the best part of your program is Richard Madley doing the weekly round-up.

Evening folks,
Courtesy of New Scientist, I happened on this site. It's very good, and I recommend watching the videos (each clip is only a few minutes, although there are loads). I think we should have this course on the national curriculum.

And private landlords are (voluntarily) on the case. No doubt.Camden flats to be evacuated over cladding
More than 800 homes in tower blocks on a council estate in Camden, north London, are be evacuated because of safety concerns over cladding in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire.
Camden Council says residents in flats in five towers on the Chalcots estate will be moved for "urgent fire safety works". (BBC News website)

Britain's biggest union tonight accuses the Brexit Minister of trying to weaken asbestos laws while he was a backbencher.
Unite highlighted a series of questions tabled by Steve Baker, who was last week handed a plum job negotiating the UK's exit from the EU, which it says prove he wants to water down health and safety protections.

Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel used the French president's first Brussels summit Friday to deliver an unmistakeable message: their countries intend to lead the EU's post-Brexit revival.
The Franco-German power couple held an unusual joint press conference after meeting their 26 European Union counterparts, against a backdrop of their respective flags and the bloc's blue banner with yellow stars.

Am developing some kind of phobia about those weird stories you get in newspapers. Was originally taking the proverbial but now starting to react biochemically (fear). Such as:
What are they supposed to be?Most shocking celebrity deaths of all time
Rare photos taken right before the most tragic moments struck
Susan Boyle lost so much weight. Her new look is mesmerising
Man asleep for 19 years wakes up and reveals the horrifying truth

A year on from the EU referendum there was some new YouGov polling for the Times this morning. The country remain quite evenly split over whether Brexit is right or wrong, 44% think leaving was the right decision, 45% the wrong decision. There is not much optimism about negotiations – only 26% expect the government to achieve a deal that is good for Britain, 31% expect a poor deal, 15% expect no deal at all
